An aircraft which has to be considered one of the finest aeroplanes of the Second World War, the Hawker Tempest V could trace its design lineage back to the Hurricane fighters which proved so decisive during the Battle of Britain only two years earlier, but would represent the absolute zenith of piston engined fighter design. Indeed, when accomplished designer Sydney Camm was looking to produce his '˜Super Hurricane'™ replacement for the aviation saviour of the Battle of Britain, the aircraft he surely had in mind was the Tempest V. As it was, the Tempest is often confused with its predecessor in Royal Air Force service, the Typhoon, even though the two are very different aeroplanes.

The original fighter replacement for the Hawker Hurricane was the Typhoon, an aircraft which attempted to combine the most powerful piston engine available at the time with a small, yet strong and heavily armed airframe. Although intended as an interceptor fighter, it became apparent during development that the new aircraft would not be able to fulfil this role, as the thickness of the wing was not conducive to high performance at high altitude. In fact, the Typhoon would endure quite a troubled development and service introduction, to the point where cancellation of the programme was seriously considered at one time. Nevertheless, the Typhoon would eventually go on to find its aviation niche as a hard-hitting ground attack aircraft and one which would come into its own during the time of the Allied invasion of Normandy.

Aware that their Typhoon had great potential but was in need of improvement, the Hawker design team started work on a new fighter project, one which incorporated many of the same philosophies as Typhoon, but also, several significant modifications. Indeed, the new aircraft was initially referred to as the Typhoon Mark II, but this was changed to Tempest as the prototype aircraft'™s first flight approached. Although this was still a big aeroplane for a single engined fighter, its airframe was light and it would be powered by the massively powerful 24 cylinder Napier Sabre engine, a powerplant which would give the new fighter spectacular performance. Making its first flight on 2nd September 1942, the new Hawker Tempest featured a newly designed laminar flow wing, which was much thinner than the wing used on its predecessor and allowed the new fighter to slip through the air at incredible speed.

At first glance, the Typhoon and Tempest do share many similarities, however, if you know where to look, it is not difficult to tell them apart. Without doubt, the wing is the most obvious distinguishing feature, as not only is this thinner than the one used on the Typhoon, it is also a completely different shape. With a straighter leading edge and more elliptical trailing edge, the Tempest'™s wing was designed for speed, even though it could still be used effectively in a ground attack role. Other Tempest design differences include a slightly longer nose and a tail section which appears to be much larger, with a more generous vertical stabiliser which features a pronounced dorsal fillet. During the prototype aircraft'™s maiden flight, it posted an impressive top speed of 477 mph in level flight, impressing both the design team and the watching Air Ministry.

The Hawker Tempest V entered Royal Air Force service in early 1944, with the first two squadrons to receive the type having both previously operated the Typhoon. It was thought that managing the incredible power generated by the Tempest'™s engine could pose problems for pilots converting from smaller aircraft types and that former Typhoon units would be best placed to negotiate its squadron introduction. In advance of the D-day landings, Tempests were being used in a similar ground attack role to the one being flown so effectively by Typhoon squadrons, however, should it be required to make the shift to air combat operations mid-mission, the Tempest was much more suited to this task. Possessing significantly greater range than the Typhoon, Tempests could loiter in the combat zone for longer periods, allowing offensive strikes deeper into occupied Europe, or allowing pilots to wait patiently for the Luftwaffe to come up and fight, where they could show them what their new fighter could really do.

As the fastest Allied fighter at low and medium altitudes, Tempest squadrons were held back for home defence duties in the weeks which followed the successful D-day landings, due to the onslaught of a sinister new weapon, the V-1 '˜Doodlebug'™ pulse jet flying bomb. The Tempest proved to be an excellent V-1 killer, using the speed of the fighter, effectiveness of its guns and bravery of its pilots to destroy large numbers of these terrifying weapons before they could wreak their havoc on British towns and cities. Britain'™s most effective force against these indiscriminate weapons, hundreds of Doodlebugs were shot down by the RAF'™s Hawker Tempest V squadrons, with Squadron Leader Joseph Berry proving to be the most proficient at this work, with no fewer than 61 V-1 '˜kills'™ to his name.

With the V-1 threat diminishing, the RAF'™s Tempest V squadrons were free to embark on aggressive seek and destroy missions into occupied Europe, using the speed, range and firepower of their latest fighter to great effect. Looking for potential V-1 launch sites and increasingly, the new German jet fighters which had started operating against the Allied air forces, the Tempest began to show that it was undoubtedly one of the most capable fighting aeroplanes in the world. Indeed, it has been reported that the aggressively flown Tempest was the Allied aircraft Messerschmitt Me262 jet pilots most feared during those early days of jet powered operations, particularly if they were caught during the landing and taking off phases of flight, when their jets were much more vulnerable.

There is no doubt that the Hawker Tempest V was a real brute of an aeroplane, fast, heavily armed and possessing performance which could better any fighter the Luftwaffe had in service, perhaps with the exception of the Me262 at full speed. Pilots who had experience flying both the Tempest V and its predecessor, the Typhoon, describe the difference as being like night and day - they actually said that it was like comparing a cart horse with a race horse. Although this seems a little harsh, as they flew the aircraft in combat, we should certainly bow to their judgement. Although appearing relatively late in WWII, the Tempest V still takes its place as one of the most effective piston engined fighters of the Second World War and was perhaps the '˜Super Hurricane'™ designer Sydney Camm had always envisaged developing.

There are unfortunately things beyond our control when it comes to shipping and this page aims to address some of the common issues we face, what to do if something goes wrong, and our promise to you.

Fast Dispatch & Order Amendments / Cancellations

We have worked hard to provide a fast dispatch and shipping service, we all like to receive our goodies as fast as possible and we are set up to provide an incredible service.

If you place an order with us by 2:30pm (weekdays) it will be picked, packed and shipped the same day. Because of this, any cancellations and amendments must be made as fast as possible. Please use the following methods if you need to change something:

Please be aware - you MUST receive confirmation of some kind (verbal or written) that we have received your request and your order has been amended. If you do not receive a response your order may be dispatched unamended and you will be responsible for any returns of unwanted items. This is particularly important during busy times.

Orders that have been fulfilled and where a dispatch notification has been sent CANNOT be amended or cancelled under any circumstances. Please see below for your rights regarding your right to cancel.

All products are shipped via Royal Mail 48 Tracked as standard. Express service refers to Tracked 24 which usually means next working day, however this is not a guarantee. We apply a discretionary signed for service at no extra charge should the value of goods exceed a desired threshold set by us.

Please note that we try our best to offer the most competitive shipping rates. Shipping fees incurred by the customer are only covering the cost of the shipping as charged by our third-party delivery company, packaging materials and labour costs.

Why hasn't my order shipped yet?

If it is after 2:30pm on a Friday, a weekend or bank holiday you must wait until the next working day before your item is shipped. Where possible we will aim to ship faster but we reserve the right to adhere to the policy.

During peak times we will pick and pack on Saturdays in order to meet our fulfilment commitment to you. In light of this you may receive a shipment notification on a Saturday but the parcel will not leave us until the Monday. Please be aware of this as it does not mean you will receive your parcel a day earlier.

If you think your order has not been dispatched we ask that you wait 24 to 48hrs as there may be system delays that are out of our control.

If for whatever reason we cannot send your item in time we will contact you to discuss so please check your email (and spam folders).

Order Not Arrived?

At Loaded Dice, we always endeavour to get your products to you quickly and safely, from time to time some deliveries may be delayed beyond our control and we would ask customers to be patient at this time if their package is delayed. Full details of your rights are below.

We strictly adhere to the following process:

  1. Please allow up to 7 days from when you receive your shipping notification to contact us as we cannot investigate prior to this. Once this amount of time has passed please email customerservice@loadeddice.uk. We do not investigate and may not respond to emails asking us to do so if 7 days have not passed
  2. If 7 days has passed we can then investigate with Royal Mail as to where your shipment may be, this may take up to 5 days to complete and is completely out of our control.
  3. If your item cannot be located then we must file a claim with Royal Mail and we will wait for the results of this claim prior to replacing or refunding.
  4. If a resolution cannot be reached and your item is still missing we reserve the right to wait for up to 90 days after purchase before issuing a replacement or refund.

Delivery Failure

If you fail to take delivery of the ordered goods and they are returned to us, we will contact you upon their arrival via email. A refund of the cost of goods (minus shipping fees) will be processed within 7 days unless you have notified us before then to advise that the goods are still required. If the goods are still required, you will be charged an additional shipping fee for a second delivery which will be agreed with you prior to dispatch.

Incorrect delivery address - the customer is entirely responsible for providing the correct delivery address as we ship exactly as it is written. We cannot physically check every address before sending out so please take care to fill it out correctly. If your order is shipped to an incorrect address and is 'delivered' then the customer is then responsible for retrieving the parcel from that address.

Any packages returned to us due to an incorrect delivery address will be refunded (minus the postage cost). If a redelivery is required then payment will be required for the redelivery. We are also not responsible for any delays caused by having an incorrect delivery address.

Right to Cancel

As a consumer you have the right to cancel your order 14 days after your purchase. We advise that you contact us as quickly as possible to avoid disappointment.

The outcome of your cancellation depends on the timeframe that this is done within:

1) Cancellation prior to dispatch - Full refund (including shipping cost) will be processed as soon as we confirm it has not been shipped from our warehouse (normally if you have not received a dispatch notification).

2) Cancellation after dispatch but prior to delivery - Customer must refuse goods and refund will be given once it is received by Loaded Dice. Any shipping fees will not be refunded.

3) Cancellation after goods received (within 14 days or sooner) - Customer is liable for the return shipping cost, refund will be given once the item is received by Loaded Dice and any shipping fees will not be refunded.

Stock Outs

Usually everything displayed on our site as "In Stock" is present in our warehouse and available for immediate dispatch. In the unlikely event that any ordered goods are not readily available to us, we reserve the right to cancel your order. You will receive an email notification of any order cancellation as a result of stock out confirming that any pre-authorisation has been released or payment refunded as relevant in line with our Payment Terms, to the extent that the out-of-stock item forms part of a larger order, all other goods ordered by the customer will be dispatched in the normal way.

Delivery Timeframes

It is our objective to achieve on time delivery on all orders. We monitor our delivery partners and our experience is that delivery is successful within the chosen delivery time period in 99% of cases.

We can use a number of third-party courier service providers. Once dispatched, the on-time delivery of a package is the responsibility of the relevant courier company and Loaded Dice cannot be held responsible for a package not reaching its destination on time.

In order to avoid disappointment, we suggest that customers place orders well in advance of when they are required to allow for any unforeseen delays. We accept no responsibility for delays/loss of revenue to customer's projects/deadlines due to shipping delays.

Changed Your Mind?

Our policy has been written in accordance with Citizens Advice Guidelines.

If you have changed your mind and wish to return something for a refund you must follow this procedure:

  1. Notify us within 14 days of receipt of the item that you wish to return it. Please tell us your order number, name and which item(s) you are returning.
  2. Within another 14 days send the item(s) back to us (Address above) and include a note stating the order number and your name. The item must in an unused and resell-able condition. Any damage incurred to the item under your care may result in your refund being refused. We highly recommend using some kind of tracked or recorded service to prevent any shipment issues, we cannot take responsibility for any loss of parcels being returned to us.
  3. Once your item is received please wait while we inspect the item, this may take up to 7 days (but usually quicker) and we will process the refund which could take a further 3-5 days depending on your bank. We will notify you by email during this process.

Please note, any items returned to us due the customer changing their mind will be refunded minus original shipping fees we have incurred.

Faulty or Damaged Item

In the unlikely event that your item arrives damaged or faulty please follow this procedure:

  1. Notify us within 14 days of receipt that the item is faulty or damaged. Please tell us your order number, name, description of the fault and pictures if necessary.
  2. If we accept the return we will send you a return label via email.
  3. Within another 14 days send the item(s) back to us (Address above) and include a note stating the order number and your name.
  4. Once your item is received please wait while we inspect the item, this may take up to 7 days (but usually quicker) and we will process the refund which could take a further 3-5 days depending on your bank. We will notify you by email during this process.
