Necrons lore

The Necrons are one of the most ancient and enigmatic races in the Warhammer 40,000 universe, characterized by their skeletal metallic bodies and highly advanced technology. Their story begins in the early days of the galaxy, with their ancestors, the Necrontyr.

The Necrontyr were a race plagued by a short and painful existence due to their sun's harsh radiation. This hardship fostered a culture of bitterness and envy, particularly towards races with longer lifespans. Their desperation for a solution to their plight led them into a fateful encounter with the C'tan, god-like star-eating entities of immense power.

The Necrontyr offered themselves to the C'tan in exchange for immortality. The C'tan agreed, but their gift came with a terrible price. The Necrontyr were transformed into the Necrons, their consciousnesses transferred into bodies of living metal known as necrodermis. This process eradicated their emotions and individuality, turning them into a race of immortal, soulless machines. The C'tan, having consumed the life energies of the Necrontyr, grew even more powerful, and the Necrons became their slaves.

Under the rule of the C'tan, the Necrons built a vast and terrifying empire, their armies nearly unstoppable. They waged war against the Old Ones, an ancient and highly advanced race, as part of the War in Heaven. The Old Ones created several other races, including the Eldar, to combat the Necron threat. The war was devastating, and the Necrons, despite their initial success, faced mounting resistance.

Realizing that continued servitude to the C'tan would lead to their ultimate destruction, the Necrons, led by the Silent King Szarekh, turned on their god-like masters. They managed to shatter the C'tan into fragments, imprisoning them in special devices called Tesseract Labyrinths. With their former masters subdued, the Necrons were free but weakened. Szarekh, seeing the toll of the endless war, ordered his people into the Great Sleep, a stasis that would last millions of years, allowing the galaxy to recover and leaving the Necrons to awaken when the stars were right.

Millions of years later, the Necrons are beginning to awaken. Their once-glorious empire lies in ruins, and the galaxy has changed beyond recognition. The Necrons now face new threats from younger races like the Imperium of Man, the Tyranids, and the Eldar. Their motivations vary; some Necron Overlords seek to rebuild their empire, others seek revenge, and some pursue the extermination of all lesser life forms.

The Necrons' technology remains among the most advanced in the galaxy. Their weapons, powered by gauss technology, can strip atoms from a target's body, and their constructs, such as the Monoliths and Tomb Spyders, are fearsome on the battlefield. Their necrodermis bodies can repair themselves, making them extremely difficult to destroy permanently.

Despite their mechanical nature, some Necron leaders have retained a degree of their former personalities and ambitions. The Silent King himself has returned, seeking to unite the fragmented Necron dynasties and reclaim their former glory. However, the awakening process is unpredictable, and not all Necrons emerge from stasis with their faculties intact, leading to conflicts both internal and external.

The Necrons represent a chilling blend of ancient history and futuristic horror, a reminder of the galaxy's violent past and a harbinger of potential doom. Their reawakening is one of the many threats that loom over the galaxy in the dark future of Warhammer 40,000, where there is only war.
