Citadel Spray paints are the quick-start button for miniature painting. They’re designed to prime and/or basecoat your models with smooth, even coverage, giving your brush paints something to grip and helping your finish stay durable through handling and gameplay. A good spray coat also makes everything that follows easier—Base paints cover better, Shades behave more predictably, and highlights look cleaner. They’re ideal for batch painting: knock out a whole squad in minutes, get consistent colour across an army, or lay down a strong foundation on vehicles and terrain without fighting brush marks. Many sprays also match key Citadel colours, making it easy to keep your scheme consistent from the first step. For best results: shake well, spray in short bursts, keep a sensible distance, and build up coverage gradually. Avoid heavy passes that flood detail, and let the model dry fully before painting. Do it right and you’ll get that satisfying “everything is ready to paint” moment—fast.

Frequently Asked Question

They’re mainly for priming and/or basecoating minis quickly with smooth, even coverage that helps later paint layers stick and last.

If it’s a spray designed for priming/basecoating (most are), it generally acts as your primer layer too—one step instead of two.

Shake well, spray in short bursts, keep a steady distance, and build coverage with a few light passes rather than one heavy coat.

Usually conditions or distance: too cold/humid, spraying too far away, or not shaking enough. Warm the can slightly (not hot), shake more, and spray a bit closer with lighter passes.

Give it time to fully dry and cure—usually at least 15–30 minutes to handle lightly, and longer if conditions are cold or damp. If it still feels tacky, wait.
