A pair of plastic sprue clippers is the single most essential modelling tool. Choose cutters specifically designed for plastic hobby use rather than hardware store wire cutters, which crush rather than cut cleanly.

Standard clippers leave a small nub of plastic that needs tidying with a knife or file. Flush cutters cut much closer to the part, leaving minimal cleanup required. They are more expensive but significantly reduce work on complex kits.

Clean blades regularly and store with the safety guard on. Never cut wire or metal with plastic clippers as this permanently damages the blades. Occasional application of light oil to the pivot extends lifespan.

Pliers are not essential for basic assembly but are very useful for bending wire for pinning, holding small parts during gluing, and any conversion work involving metal components.

Sprue cutters are used to remove model parts from the plastic sprue frame. A clean cut close to the part minimises the amount of mould line and nub cleanup needed afterwards.
