Yes — for any miniature that will be handled during gaming, varnishing is strongly recommended. Unvarnished paint chips and wears quickly on contact points. Even a single coat of matt varnish provides significant protection.
Matt varnish dries with a flat, non-reflective finish ideal for most miniatures. Satin gives a subtle sheen. Gloss gives a wet, reflective look and is sometimes used as a base coat before washes, or for final effects on gems and lenses.
Applying a gloss varnish first gives maximum physical protection, then a matt coat over the top gives the desired finish. This combination gives better protection than matt alone as gloss varnish is more durable.
Yes — spray varnish applied in cold, damp, or very humid conditions can cause a white frosting effect known as blushing. Always spray in dry conditions between 15 and 25 degrees Celsius and avoid very humid days.
No — apply varnish before adding Technical paint effects. Applying varnish over Blood for the Blood God or similar effects will significantly dull the wet appearance. Add these effects last after varnishing.
