If you only own one shade, make it Nuln Oil. This black wash is the most reliable trick in the hobby — flood it over metal, armour and detailed areas and it instantly finds every recess, leaving crisp definition and a grimy, battle-worn finish. It's the closest thing to a "make it look painted" button there is.

Best for

  • Shading silver and gold metallics to instant effect
  • Sharpening detail on armour, mechanical bits and black areas

One pot covers an army's worth of models — no wonder it's the most-used paint on most hobby desks.

The one shade nobody regrets buying. Stock up alongside Agrax Earthshade and a decent shade brush.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does Nuln Oil actually do?

It's a black wash. You flood it over a painted model and it flows into all the recesses, instantly adding shadow and definition. It's the closest thing the hobby has to a “make it look painted” button.

How big is the pot and how far does it go?

It's an 18ml pot, and a little goes a long way — one pot will comfortably shade an army's worth of models before you need another.

Do I need to thin it, or can I use it straight from the pot?

Straight from the pot. It's a ready-to-use, water-based acrylic — no thinning or mixing required.

What is Nuln Oil best used on?

Metals especially — silver and gold armour, weapons and mechanical bits come alive with a single coat. It's also brilliant for sharpening detail on armour and darker areas.

Should I get Nuln Oil or Agrax Earthshade first?

Get both if you can — they're the classic starter pair. Nuln Oil (black) is for metals and cooler tones; Agrax (brown) is for leather, wood and earthy bits. Most painters keep both on the desk.
