Know the Enemy

I The Horus Heresy

Ten thousand years ago, half the Space Marine Legions turned on the Emperor in the galaxy-burning civil war of the Horus Heresy. The traitors lost — and have never stopped fighting.

II Four Dark Gods

Khorne the Blood God, Tzeentch the Changer of Ways, Nurgle the Plague Lord and Slaanesh the Prince of Excess — every Chaos army serves, knowingly or not, the Ruinous Powers.

III The Long War

From the Eye of Terror the traitors wage their Long War against the Imperium — ancient Astartes, daemon hosts and corrupted war engines, united only by hatred of the Corpse-Emperor.

The Lore

Ten millennia ago the Warmaster Horus led half the Space Marine Legions into rebellion, and the galaxy has never healed. The defeated traitors fled into the Eye of Terror — a wound in reality where the Warp bleeds through — and there they were remade by their new masters: the four Dark Gods of Chaos.

Now they wage the Long War: ancient Astartes twisted by ten thousand years of hatred, legions dedicated to blood, plague, sorcery and excess, daemon hosts that are the gods' own nightmares given form, and fallen Knights piloted by the damned. They do not fight to win territory. They fight to watch the Imperium burn.

On the Tabletop

Chaos armies span the full spectrum of villainy on the table: the flexible, pick-and-mix warbands of the Chaos Space Marines, the screaming melee flood of the World Eaters, the unkillable trudge of the Death Guard, the spell-slinging control of the Thousand Sons, and daemon hosts that run from swarms of horrors to towering Greater Daemons.

Most are aggressive, character-led armies that reward bold play and getting stuck in — and every one of them is a painter's dream. Choose a faction below for its lore, tabletop guide and full kit list.

The Dark Gods’ legions — traitor Space Marines, warp-born daemons and corrupted war-engines bent on burning the galaxy. Choose your faction below.

Read the lore in our Faction Files: Chaos Space Marines, Death Guard, Thousand Sons and World Eaters.

Each Chaos army plays very differently. Chaos Space Marines are the flexible all-rounders of the Long War. Death Guard are slow, tough and diseased; World Eaters want to be in combat on turn one; Thousand Sons bring psychic sorcery and near-indestructible Rubric Marines; Emperor's Children are fast, vain duellists. Chaos Daemons pour out of the warp itself, and Chaos Knights stride over the lot of them.

Where to start: a Combat Patrol is a ready-made force in one box, such as Combat Patrol: Chaos Space Marines, Death Guard or World Eaters. See every box in Combat Patrols. How do they play? Our Army Analysis guides cover Chaos Space Marines, Death Guard and World Eaters, and our Chaos Space Marines lore and must-have minis guide is a great primer if you're new to the dark side.

Warhammer 40K Chaos – Traitor Legions & Daemons of the Dark Gods Chaos is the Imperium's oldest enemy in Warhammer 40,000 — Space Marine Legions that turned traitor ten thousand years ago, now warped and empowered by the four Chaos Gods, fighting alongside daemons and corrupted war engines. This collection covers Chaos Space Marines, Death Guard, Thousand Sons, World Eaters, Emperor's Children, Chaos Daemons and Chaos Knights. Each Legion is tied to one of the four Chaos Gods and plays very differently as a result. Death Guard follow Nurgle and are built to be slow, disgustingly resilient and almost impossible to wipe off the table. Thousand Sons follow Tzeentch and lean hard into psychic powers and sorcery over raw melee. World Eaters follow Khorne and are the opposite: fast, brutal, close-combat-only armies with almost no ranged options by design. Emperor's Children follow Slaanesh and favour speed and excess over the other three. Chaos Daemons can be built purely from warp-born creatures loyal to any god, or mixed in as allies alongside a Legion army. If you'd rather not commit to a single god, generic Chaos Space Marines give you the most flexibility — a mixed-cult army that can take units and characters loyal to any or none of the four powers, which also makes it the easiest army to expand into a specific Legion later if one god's aesthetic grabs you. 11th Edition launched in June 2026, and every Chaos faction has rules for it. New codexes are rolling out through the edition, so check the latest codex for your army before you build a list. Chaos Knights sit slightly apart from the rest — corrupted super-heavy war engines that can be fielded either as a dedicated army or as allies to bulk out any of the above. Frequently Asked Questions

Khorne (rage and bloodshed), Nurgle (decay and resilience), Tzeentch (change and sorcery) and Slaanesh (excess and sensation). Most Chaos Legions and daemon armies are tied to one god — World Eaters to Khorne, Death Guard to Nurgle, Thousand Sons to Tzeentch, and Emperor's Children to Slaanesh.

Chaos Space Marines are corrupted human Legions in power armour — physical soldiers who happen to be warped by Chaos. Chaos Daemons are creatures born directly from the Warp with no human origin at all. The two can be combined in the same army as allies.

Generic Chaos Space Marines are the most flexible starting point, since you can mix units loyal to any god rather than committing to one Legion's aesthetic and playstyle straight away. If you already know you want pure melee, World Eaters are the simplest army to learn on.

Yes — Chaos Knights are corrupted super-heavy war engines, stocked here alongside the Legions and daemons. They can be built as a standalone army or used as powerful allies to bulk out a Chaos Space Marines or Chaos Daemons force.

11th Edition launched in June 2026, and every Chaos faction has rules for it. New codexes are rolling out through the edition, so check the latest codex for your army before you build a list.
