Salamanders: Army Analysis

Who are the Salamanders?

The Salamanders are the Space Marine Chapter that fights with a blowtorch in one hand and a hammer in the other. Gene-sons of the primarch Vulkan, forged on the volcanic death world of Nocturne, they are the burn-them-off-the-objective specialists of the Adeptus Astartes — masters of flame and melta who close the distance and cook the enemy at point-blank range. If you fancy an army that is tough, forgiving and genuinely characterful, the Salamanders are a superb place to start.

The Core Fantasy

The Salamanders are the fire-and-forge Chapter. Where other Space Marines lean on precision or speed, the Sons of Vulkan lean in — literally. Their whole game is getting to mid and short range, weathering the incoming, and then unleashing a wall of promethium and thermal energy that no infantry unit wants to be standing in. Add master-crafted wargear, a stubborn refusal to die, and a deeply humane, civilian-protecting culture, and you have an army that feels like a smith's forge: patient, heavy, and utterly lethal up close.

Expect:

  • Flame and melta everywhere: the signature look and feel — burn infantry, melt tanks.
  • Durability: tough units and master-crafted gear that shrug off punishment.
  • Short-range menace: you want to be close, so the whole plan is built around getting there.
  • Forgiveness: resilient bodies mean your early mistakes rarely lose you the game.

How They Play on the Tabletop

Mechanically the Salamanders are a flavour of Codex: Space Marines, so you get the full, flexible Astartes toolbox — then you tilt it hard towards flamers and melta. The plan is refreshingly honest: advance behind durable bodies, get into the mid-board, and turn short range into a killing zone. Aggressors clear hordes off objectives, Eradicators delete anything with a big toughness value, and the rest of the army holds the line while the forge does its work. You are rarely trying to be clever — you are trying to be inevitable.

What you'll love:

  • Straightforward game plan: get close, burn things, hold objectives. Easy to learn.
  • Punishing firepower: flamers ignore a lot of dodging, and melta melts the hard targets.
  • Staying power: resilient units let you trade well and forgive positional errors.

What can bite you:

  • Range: your best guns are short-ranged, so a faster enemy can kite you if you let them.
  • Board control: you must actually get up the table — dawdle and your damage never lands.
  • Elite footprint: like most Marines you field fewer bodies, so every unit has to earn its keep.
The Forge-Born Way of War

What makes the Salamanders sing thematically is that their durability is not passive turtling — it is the tool that buys them the time to close. Every Son of Vulkan is a smith, and it shows in the army's temperament: measured, unbreakable, and merciless once it reaches the anvil's edge. They soak the first exchanges, walk through the fire, and repay it with interest at half range. It is the most satisfying kind of resilience because it always has a payoff.

If you enjoy a Chapter that wins by refusing to fold, it is worth contrasting them with a fellow stubborn breed. The Iron Hands chase durability through cold machine-logic and self-repairing vehicles, while the Salamanders get theirs from master-crafted quality and sheer human grit. Same toughness, very different soul — and reading both is a good way to work out which flavour of unkillable suits you.

Key Unit Roles (What You'll Commonly Need)

1) The Line (Intercessors / Tactical core): your reliable objective-holders and the backbone of any list. They sit on points and refuse to leave.

2) The Horde-Burners (Aggressors): the Salamanders' signature. Flamer gauntlets that auto-hit and delete infantry squads at close range — perfect for prising the enemy off an objective.

3) The Tank-Melters (Eradicators): melta rifles that evaporate monsters and vehicles. A small unit that punches terrifyingly above its points.

4) The Anvil (Terminators / a Dreadnought): heavy, resilient bodies that hold the centre and hit like a dropped forge-hammer.

5) The Warlord (a Captain or Chaplain): a character to buff the line and give your durable units the push to keep grinding — with Vulkan He'stan and Adrax Agatone as the iconic named options once you fancy leaning into the lore. Getting Started the Smart Way

Step 1 — Start with a Combat Patrol or the core: get the fundamentals on the table.

  • A block of Intercessors to hold objectives.
  • A character to lead them.

Step 2 — Add the signature guns: this is where the army becomes Salamanders.

  • Aggressors for burning infantry off points.
  • Eradicators for melting the enemy's heavy hitters.

Step 3 — Add an anvil: a resilient centrepiece.

  • Terminators or a Dreadnought to hold the middle and absorb fire.

Step 4 — Learn the scheme before you commit: the dark green is beginner-friendly, but the fire effects reward a little practice.

Common Beginner Mistakes (Avoid These)
  • Sitting back: your best guns are short-ranged. Camp in your deployment zone and you have thrown the army away.
  • Feeding units piecemeal: Marines are elite and few. Send one unit in alone and it dies for nothing.
  • Ignoring objectives: burning things is fun, but games are won on points, not body count.
  • Overloading on melta: Eradicators are brilliant, but bring the flamers too — you still need to clear infantry.
  • Rushing the fire effects: object-source lighting looks amazing but wants patience. Base the model first.
Who the Salamanders Are For

Choose the Salamanders if you want a tough, forgiving army with a crystal-clear plan — get close, burn everything, and refuse to die — plus one of the most rewarding paint schemes in the hobby. Give them a miss if you crave long-range gunlines or lightning-fast manoeuvre play; the Sons of Vulkan want to be in your opponent's face.

Salamanders FAQ
Are the Salamanders good for beginners?

Yes — they are one of the most forgiving Space Marine Chapters to start with. Their units are durable, their game plan is simple (get close and burn things), and mistakes rarely cost you the whole game.

What are the signature Salamanders units?

Aggressors with their flamer gauntlets and Eradicators with melta rifles are the flavour-defining choices — short-range firepower that burns infantry and melts tanks. Named heroes Vulkan He'stan and Adrax Agatone lead them once you fancy the lore.

How do you paint Salamanders?

Dark green armour, jet-black skin and glowing red eyes. It is a brilliant scheme for practising freehand fire, lava bases and object-source lighting, and the base green is beginner-friendly — start with a test model and a few Warhammer Colour paints.

What rules do the Salamanders use?

They play as a flavour of Codex: Space Marines, tilted towards flamers and melta. You get the full, flexible Astartes toolbox and lean it into close-range, master-crafted firepower and durability.

Final thought: the Salamanders do not out-shoot you from across the table or dance around your flanks — they simply walk through your fire and set your objective alight. Patient, tough and utterly relentless, they are the forge that never cools.
