Somewhere beneath the Imperial Palace on Holy Terra, ten thousand golden giants stand watch over a corpse on a throne. They have done so for ten thousand years. They do not sleep, they do not rotate off shift, and they were each hand-built by a living god specifically to be the last thing His enemies ever see. Meet the Adeptus Custodes: the most expensive doormen in the galaxy, and worth every penny.
Welcome back to Faction Files, our series pulling apart the lore of Warhammer 40,000 one faction at a time — no dice, no meta, just who these lot are and why they are the way they are. Today: the Emperor's personal praetorians, the golden demigods better known as the Ten Thousand. If you fancy building a warband of your own, our Adeptus Custodes collection is right this way.

FACTION FILES // DOSSIER No. 004 — CLASSIFIED: AURICLADE
- Designation: Adeptus Custodes (formerly the Legio Custodes; the Ten Thousand)
- Threat classification: Imperial — hand-crafted transhuman guardians
- Origin: Holy Terra; forged individually by the Emperor Himself
- Governing intelligence / leadership: The Captain-General, currently Trajann Valoris
- Modus operandi: Guard the Throne; strike where the Imperium can least afford to lose
- On the tabletop: The ultimate elite army — few models, each an absolute monster
- Difficulty (hobby): Low model count, high stakes — every miniature has to sing
FILE 01 // Origins: the Emperor's own handiwork
Most of the Imperium's warriors are made in batches. Space Marines are gene-forged from a template, implant by implant, in their thousands. The Custodes are not. Each one was crafted individually by the Emperor of Mankind personally — a bespoke process of alchemy, genecraft and psycho-conditioning so laborious that a single Custodian could take decades to complete. They are, quite literally, one-offs. There is no Chapter, no gene-seed line, no mass production. Just ten thousand hand-made masterpieces.
They were born to guard one man, and when that man was mortally wounded duelling Horus at the end of the Heresy and interred within the Golden Throne, their purpose did not change so much as narrow. For the ten millennia since, the bulk of the Ten Thousand have kept a silent, unbroken vigil over the Master of Mankind, watching a galaxy fall apart from the one room they refuse to leave.
FILE 02 // The Ten Thousand: better than a Space Marine, and they know it
Here is the thing to get your head around. A Space Marine is a superhuman. A Custodian is the thing you build when a superhuman isn't good enough. Faster, stronger, sharper of mind, clad in gleaming auramite armour and wielding a guardian spear — an integrated bolter and a power blade in one elegant package — a single Custodian can carve through squads of lesser foes without breaking stride.
But raw power isn't the interesting part. The interesting part is that each of them is an individual. Unlike the disciplined uniformity of a Space Marine Chapter, every Custodian is a distinct person with a name, a temperament and often several lifetimes of accumulated wisdom. They are scholars, duellists, philosophers and paranoid strategists all at once. When a faction has only ten thousand members in the entire galaxy, you can afford to make every single one irreplaceable — and the Emperor did.

FILE 03 // How they wage war: precision, not numbers
The Custodes do not do attrition. They cannot — there are only ten thousand of them and no way to make more, so every casualty is a permanent, unrepeatable loss. Where the wider Imperium throws bodies at a problem, the Ten Thousand arrive in a golden spearhead, decapitate the threat, and leave before the enemy fully understands what happened.
They keep their own counsel, too. The Custodes are famously secretive, guarding not just the Emperor's body but His secrets — running the Blood Games, a brutal internal exercise in which Custodians attempt to infiltrate and breach the Palace's own defences, precisely so no one else ever can. Trust, for these lads, is a security vulnerability.
When they take the field in numbers it is because something has gone catastrophically wrong — a threat so grave that thinning the guard on the Throne, even briefly, is the lesser risk. And that is exactly what has started to happen.
FILE 04 // The Talons of the Emperor: silence and gold
The Custodes rarely march alone. At their side come the Sisters of Silence — the Null-maidens, warrior women born with the pariah gene, blanks whose very presence smothers psychic power and turns a witch's sorcery to ash in their mouths. Together, gold and silence, the two orders form the Talons of the Emperor: the sword and the shield of the Master of Mankind.
For most of the Imperium's history the bulk of the Ten Thousand remained on Terra, with only handfuls ever ranging beyond the Palace walls. Then the Great Rift tore the galaxy in two, and Captain-General Trajann Valoris did something without precedent — he committed the Custodes to the wider war in numbers never seen before, reasoning that a galaxy left to burn is no galaxy worth guarding a Throne within. If you ever wondered what could frighten the Emperor's own bodyguard into leaving His side in force, the answer is: the state of everything else.
FILE 05 // Why collectors love them
Here's the good news for the hobbyist, and it's a big one: this is the army for people who want a small, jaw-dropping collection rather than a table-filling horde. A full Custodes force is a fraction of the model count of most armies, which means you can pour real love into every single miniature. No batch-painting fifty gaunts here — every model is a centrepiece.
And oh, the models. The Custodes range is some of the most ornate, detailed kit Games Workshop produces — winged helms, filigreed plate, Dawneagle jetbikes and towering Telemon Dreadnoughts. A few of the practical joys:
- Gold that actually looks good: painting convincing gold is a genuine hobby skill, and there's no better teacher than an army that's entirely made of it.
- Quality over quantity: a handful of models can be a full army, so a starter box goes a long way and your wallet gets a rare night off.
- Showpiece characters: Trajann Valoris and the Allarus Terminators are the sort of models you finish and put on a shelf, not just a table.

Threat assessment
You do not beat the Custodes on quality — that argument was settled the moment the Emperor made them. You beat them, if you beat them at all, on maths: there are only so many, and once one falls, that's it, forever. So the Ten Thousand fight like every life is priceless, because every life is. An enemy that cannot be outmatched and will not be outmanoeuvred, deployed only when the Imperium truly cannot afford to lose. When the gold shows up, it is already too late to run.
Final thought: the Custodes are what happens when a god decides good enough won't do and builds ten thousand perfect warriors by hand. They are proof that in a galaxy of endless mass-produced soldiers, the scariest thing on the board is still the one that was made with care.
