Most Space Marine Chapters greet a burning city with a bolter volley and a body count. The Salamanders turn up, put the fire out, carry the survivors to safety, and then get to work with the flamers. Yes, the lads who love fire more than anyone in the galaxy are also the ones most likely to save your gran. Grimdark contains multitudes.
Welcome to Faction Files, our ongoing dossier series where we take one corner of the 40k universe and tell you what makes it tick — no stat-lines, just story, atmosphere and why it might end up eating your paint budget. Today we crack open the file on the sons of Vulkan. If you fancy a proper look at the models while you read, their full range lives in the Salamanders collection.
FACTION FILES // DOSSIER No. 032 — CLASSIFIED: PROMETHEAN
- Designation: Salamanders — XVIII Legion, gene-sons of Primarch Vulkan.
- Threat classification: Elite. Few in number, near-impossible to shift, and every one a walking foundry.
- Origin: Nocturne, a volcanic death world of savage seismic and tidal cycles, watched over by the moon-fortress Prometheus.
- Governing leadership: The Chapter's masters and Forgefather Vulkan He'stan, keeper of the hunt for Vulkan's lost relics.
- Modus operandi: Save the innocent, master-craft the wargear, then burn the enemy to slag at close range.
- On the tabletop: Resilient close-range specialists with master-crafted weapons and a love of flame and melta.
- Difficulty (hobby): Friendly. Dark green base, black skin, red eyes — bold, forgiving, and dead striking on the shelf.
FILE 01 // Origins: forged on an anvil world
Nocturne is not a nice place to live. It is a volcanic death world locked in a brutal dance with its own moon, and when the tides pull the magma up, the planet quite literally tears itself apart on a cycle. The people who survive there do so by being tougher, calmer and more community-minded than anywhere sane. That is the stock the Salamanders are drawn from, and it shows.
Their Primarch is Vulkan, a giant of a man who landed on Nocturne and became its greatest smith and protector. He is also a perpetual — a being who cannot truly stay dead — which means somewhere out in the dark, Vulkan may still be walking the galaxy. Handy thing for a father to be, when the setting's default mood is 'everyone you love is doomed'.
Two quirks mark a Salamander out instantly. Thanks to Nocturne's environment and a twist in their gene-seed, they have jet-black skin and burning red eyes — the most visually distinct Marines in the Imperium. And there are simply fewer of them than most Chapters, which only makes each one more of an occasion.
FILE 02 // The defining trait: the kindest killers in the galaxy
Here is the thing that makes them special. In a setting built on cruelty and zealotry, the Salamanders are genuinely humane. They do not hole up in a fortress-monastery and sneer at mortals. They live among the people of Nocturne, work beside them, and treat the protection of civilians as a sacred duty rather than an afterthought. Where another Chapter might raze a city to deny it to the enemy, a Salamander asks who is still trapped inside first.
They are also master smiths to a man. Every single Salamander is a trained blacksmith and artificer who forges his own wargear — the armour, the blades, the guns. That is why their equipment is so often master-crafted: it is personal, hammered out by the warrior who carries it. Culture and craft in one. It is a lovely bit of lore and, frankly, a brilliant excuse to go to town on your kitbashing.
And oh, they love fire. Flamers, melta, thermal weapons — anything that turns the enemy into a memory and a smell. On a Chapter whose home is a world of volcanoes, ruled by a father who is the setting's greatest smith, the fire motif is not decoration. It is who they are.
FILE 03 // How they wage war: get close, hold firm, burn it down
Salamanders do not do dashing cavalry charges or surgical decapitation strikes. Their way of war is patient and immovable. They wade in, they refuse to break, and they specialise in the short, brutal range where flamers and melta do their ugliest work. If you have ever watched something try to dislodge a Salamander line and simply fail, over and over, you understand the appeal.
Because they master-craft their gear and field fewer bodies, every warrior is expected to be worth several lesser Marines — durable, self-reliant, and lethal up close. They are the wall that does not fall and the flame that does not go out. Sieges, boarding actions, last stands to buy civilians time to flee — this is their natural habitat.
FILE 04 // The wrinkle: the Tome of Fire and old scars from Isstvan
Vulkan left his sons a legacy in the form of the Tome of Fire and nine lost artefacts scattered across the galaxy. Recovering them is the life's work of the Forgefather, a role currently held by Vulkan He'stan, who quests the stars gathering the relics of the Chapter's absent father. It is a beautiful hook — a Chapter defined not by conquest but by the search for the pieces of the man who made them. Another name worth knowing is Adrax Agatone, a captain who embodies the modern Salamander: stubborn, protective, and hard as the anvil.
Their history has darker chapters too. The Salamanders were one of the Legions caught in the horror of the Drop Site Massacre at Isstvan V, betrayed and shattered alongside the Iron Hands and the Raven Guard. The three survived together, bled together, and are forever bound by that betrayal as the so-called Shattered Legions. If you like your loyalists with a grudge and a scar, this is the trio.
FILE 05 // Why collectors love them: the best excuse to paint fire
Painting Salamanders is a joy. The dark green armour is bold and forgiving, the black skin and red eyes give every model instant drama, and the flame-and-drake motifs invite you to show off without demanding a lifetime of skill. Add a few object-source-lighting tricks on the flamers and pilot lights and even a tabletop-standard army looks like it belongs in a display case.
They are also a cracking painter's project because they are fewer in number by design — a smaller, characterful force where every model can earn extra love, rather than a horde you rush through. Start their range in the Salamanders collection, browse their cousins across the wider Space Marines range, and get that signature green right with the Warhammer Colour paints. Threat assessment
Underestimate the Salamanders at your peril. They are few, but each one is a self-forged fortress with a flamer and a saint's conscience. They will pull a child from the rubble with one hand and reduce your battle line to bubbling slag with the other — and they will not feel remotely conflicted about doing both in the same afternoon. Compassion and a plasma-hot temper, all in dark green. Lovely lads. Terrifying enemies.
Final thought: the Salamanders prove the grimdark's cruellest joke — the most humane warriors in the galaxy are also the ones most comfortable with an open flame. Bring marshmallows. Bring a will.
