Acrylics are the default for most painters — water-based, quick-drying, and easy to clean up, which is why ranges like Warhammer Colour and Vallejo Model Color dominate most painting stations. If you want faster results with less technique, Army Painter's Speedpaint 2.0 and Citadel's Contrast paints are both built to shade and finish a model in far fewer steps than traditional layering. Enamels, like Tamiya's range, dry slower and more durably, and are popular for scale model kits like aircraft and vehicles rather than miniatures. Oils sit apart from both — used mainly for blending, washes and weathering effects over a sealed acrylic base rather than as a primary paint. Airbrushing has its own dedicated ranges: Vallejo Model Air, Warhammer Colour Air and AK Interactive Real Colors are all pre-thinned specifically for spray use, saving the guesswork of thinning standard paints yourself, though any acrylic can be airbrushed once thinned correctly. If you're stripping an old paint job before starting again, isopropyl alcohol is the standard fix — a few hours' soak followed by gentle scrubbing removes most acrylics cleanly, though it's worth testing on resin or clear plastic parts first. The same paints used on injection-moulded models work just as well on resin 3D prints, once the print's been washed to remove any leftover uncured resin. Isopropyl alcohol is the standard method — soak the model for a few hours then scrub gently with an old toothbrush, repeating on stubborn areas. Test on an inconspicuous spot first if the model has clear or resin parts, since some solvents can cloud or warp them.

Standard acrylic hobby paints work fine on resin 3D prints. Wash the print first to remove leftover uncured resin, then a light primer coat helps paint adhere evenly across the surface.

Acrylics are water-based and dry fastest, making them the default for most painters. Enamels use solvent thinners, dry slower and are very durable. Oils have the longest working time and are mainly used for blending, washes and weathering over a sealed acrylic base.

Vallejo Model Air, Warhammer Colour Air and AK Interactive Real Colors are all pre-thinned specifically for airbrush use. Standard paints from any brand can also be airbrushed once thinned to the right consistency.
