Meet the Imperium's most zealous knights: sons of Dorn, sworn to a crusade that never ends. Dossier No. 029 unpacks the Black Templars' faith, fury and Black Sword — and why their black-and-white plate is such a joy to collect.

Faction Files: Black Templars — Lore of the Eternal Crusade

Posted By Jack Angel on

Somewhere out in the dark, a fleet has been sailing for ten thousand years and has never once dropped anchor. No home world waits for it. No parade welcomes it back. There is only the next heretic, the next xenos, the next world in need of cleansing — and a black-armoured knight who will happily take a vow of silence until it is dealt with. The Black Templars do not go home, because for them the crusade never ends.

Welcome back to Faction Files, the series where we crack open the lore of Warhammer 40,000 one faction at a time — no dice, no meta, just who they are and why they are the way they are. Today: the Imperium's most zealous knights. If reading about them puts a Black Sword in your hand, our Black Templars collection is right this way.

FACTION FILES // DOSSIER No. 029 — CLASSIFIED: CRUCIS-AETERNA
  • Designation: Black Templars (Adeptus Astartes, Successor Chapter)
  • Threat classification: Imperial — zealot shock crusade
  • Origin: Second Founding successors of the Imperial Fists; gene-line of Rogal Dorn
  • Governing intelligence / leadership: The High Marshal (currently Helbrecht); the Emperor's Champion leads by holy vision
  • Modus operandi: Close, pray, and put the sword in — faith over firepower
  • On the tabletop: Aggressive assault army; get in your face and stay there
  • Difficulty (hobby): Moderate — black armour is quick to block in, trickier to make sing
FILE 01 // Origins: the last son of Sigismund

To understand the Black Templars, you have to go back to Rogal Dorn's Imperial Fists — the Emperor's own praetorians during the Horus Heresy. The greatest warrior of that Legion was Sigismund, first Emperor's Champion, a man who cut down traitors like a scythe through wheat. When the Legions were broken up into Chapters after the Heresy, Sigismund was given command of a new one, and he took his knights and vowed never to sheathe his blade while the Emperor's enemies drew breath.

That was the beginning of the Eternal Crusade, and it has never stopped. The Black Templars are the sons of Dorn by way of Sigismund, and they carry his oath forward across ten millennia. Fancy the wider bloodline? The whole Space Marine range traces back to the same gene-fathers, the Emperor's Primarchs — but no Chapter wears the legacy quite as loudly as this one.

FILE 02 // The Eternal Crusade: faith is the deadliest weapon

Here is the thing that makes the Black Templars them. Most Space Marine Chapters keep to the Codex Astartes — around a thousand Marines, a fixed home world, a tidy company structure. The Templars politely ignore most of that. They have no home world. They field crusades scattered across the galaxy, and their true numbers are unknown, likely far in excess of any codex limit. They are, essentially, a Chapter that decided the rulebook was optional and faith was mandatory.

And that faith runs deep enough to be a liability. The Black Templars distrust the psyker so profoundly that, almost uniquely among loyalist Marines, they field no Librarians at all. Where another Chapter sees a battlefield asset, the Templars see a witch and reach for a sword. It is zealotry weaponised — utterly incorruptible, utterly uncompromising, and occasionally its own worst enemy.

FILE 03 // How they wage war: get in close and swear a vow

The Templar way of war is refreshingly direct: close the distance and fight hand to hand, where faith and fury count for most. Before battle, they swear vows — binding oaths that steel them for the fight ahead — and then they go looking for the thickest part of the enemy line to break themselves against.

Their signature formation is the Crusader Squad, and it hides one of the Chapter's best quirks. Because they recruit constantly and field endless crusades, the Templars send half-trained Neophytes into battle alongside veteran Initiates — a scarred old warrior fighting shoulder to shoulder with the youth he is training, learning the craft the only way the Templars know how: at the sharp end. It is brutal, it is effective, and it is a genuinely lovely bit of narrative to build an army around.

When a Templar crusade is done with a world, the heretic is ash, the witch is dead, and the fleet is already burning for the next warzone. No garrison, no rebuilding — just the crusade, rolling on.

FILE 04 // The Emperor's Champion: the man who dreams of the sword

Every so often, a Templar is gripped by holy visions — the Emperor's Sight — and singled out as the Emperor's Champion. He is clad in the ancient Armour of Faith, handed the mighty Black Sword, and sent to seek out the enemy's greatest champion so the two can settle it personally. It is the most Arthurian thing in all of 40k, and it is glorious.

Then there is Chaplain Grimaldus, who held Helsreach on Armageddon against the orks in one of the setting's most beloved last stands, rallying a doomed hive city long after any sane commander would have called it lost. Nobody does defiant quite like a Black Templar with a vow still to keep, and Grimaldus keeping his while the sky burned is the Chapter distilled into one stubborn, soot-blackened figure.

FILE 05 // Why collectors love them

Here is the good news for the hobbyist: the Black Templars are one of the most striking armies you can put on a table, and they have got a gorgeous modern kit range to build them from. This is the Chapter you collect when you want knightly menace — black plate, white crosses, tabards, chains and scripture, and a Crusader mob bearing down on the foe.

They are a brilliant paint project too, and not the intimidating slog you might fear. A few of the practical joys:

  • Fast to get on the table: black basecoats over quickly, so you can field a playable force sooner than most.
  • Edge-highlighting heaven: the whole army is a masterclass in making black armour pop with crisp grey edges and a spot of white.
  • Detail that rewards you: parchment, purity seals, tabards and heraldry give you loads to lavish attention on once the plate is done.

New to all this and not sure where to begin? Our beginner's guide to Warhammer 40k covers the basics, and the wider Black Templars collection is where you kit out the crusade proper.

Threat assessment

The Black Templars are what happens when absolute faith is bolted to a Space Marine's gene-forged body and pointed at the horizon forever. You cannot bribe them, you cannot corrupt them, and you certainly cannot reason with them — they took a vow, and the vow does not care what you think. The Imperium considers them a blunt instrument. It also considers them one of the most reliable weapons it owns, because when a Templar crusade arrives, the matter is generally about to be closed.

Final thought: the Black Templars are 40k's true believers — knights who traded a home, a rulebook and a good night's sleep for a single unbreakable oath. There is something magnificent about an army whose entire personality is a raised sword and the words ‘no retreat, no mercy, no doubt.’
