Model kit questions, answered

What's the best model kit for a beginner?

For a glued kit, pick a Tamiya kit in 1/35, 1/48 or 1/24: the parts fit beautifully and the instructions are clear. For something even easier, a Gunpla Entry Grade or High Grade kit snaps together with no glue and is moulded in colour. The kit finder above picks out easy first builds for you.

What tools do I need to build a plastic kit?

Side cutters to take parts off the sprue, a sharp hobby knife and a sanding stick to clean them up, and plastic cement for glued kits. Paint and a couple of brushes if you want to finish it. Our top tools for model makers guide covers the rest.

What do 1/35, 1/48 and 1/72 mean?

It's the scale: a 1/35 model is 35 times smaller than the real thing, so the bigger the number, the smaller the model. 1/35 is the classic scale for tanks and military figures, 1/48 and 1/72 for aircraft, 1/24 for cars, 1/12 for big motorbikes, and 1/350 or 1/700 for warships. Gunpla comes in 1/144 (High Grade) and 1/100 (Master Grade).

What's the difference between glue and snap-fit kits?

Snap-fit kits (Gunpla, most anime kits and brick sets) push together, need no glue and are moulded in colour, so they look good straight off the sprue. Glued kits (Tamiya, Italeri, Zvezda, ICM, Dragon) are joined with plastic cement and usually painted, which takes longer but gives you the most detail and control.

What is a special order kit?

Special order kits aren't on our shelf, so we order them in from the UK distributor as soon as you buy, usually in 2–4 weeks. Pre-order kits show their expected month; makers move dates, so treat it as our best estimate rather than a promise. The badge on every kit tells you which it is, and anything marked In stock ships from Barry straight away.

Do you deliver model kits across the UK?

Yes. UK delivery is free on orders over £65, or come and see us at our shop in Barry, South Wales. If you mix in-stock and special order kits, ask us and we'll tell you how it'll ship.
