Who are the Fyreslayers?
Bare-chested, gold-obsessed and impossibly tough, the Fyreslayers are duardin mercenaries who fight for ur-gold in the name of their fire-god Grimnir. They forge that sacred gold into runes, hammer it into their very skin, and march to war atop fire-breathing Magmadroths. In Warhammer Age of Sigmar they're the ultimate stubborn melee army — a small force of warriors who simply refuse to die.
The Core Fantasy
Fyreslayers are the immovable melee army of the Mortal Realms: a compact force of incredibly durable warriors who wade into the thick of it and grind the enemy down. This is the fantasy of the unbreakable mercenary band — few in number, rich in grudges, and tougher than anything has a right to be.
Expect:
- Exceptional durability — your warriors are brutally hard to shift
- Hard-hitting close-combat infantry as your core
- Sacred runes that buff the army in battle
- Magmadroths — fire-breathing monster mounts as centrepieces
How They Play on the Tabletop
The Fyreslayers plan is simple and stubborn: advance, dig in, and out-last the enemy in melee. You don't have many models and you're not quick, so you pick your ground carefully, weather the journey across the board, and then refuse to break once you arrive. Activate your runes at the right moment and your dwarves become a wall the enemy simply cannot move.
What you'll love:
- Resilience: holding objectives is a real strength when nothing can dislodge you
- Melee power: your warriors hit hard once they connect
- Simplicity: a focused army with a clear, satisfying game plan
What can bite you:
- Speed: you're slow, so fast armies can dance around you
- Shooting-light: little ranged threat means you must close the gap
- Low numbers: a small force can be stretched across multiple objectives
Slay for Gold, Burn for Grimnir
The Fyreslayers' signature is ur-gold runes: sacred gold pounded into their flesh that, when activated in battle, grants powerful army-wide buffs — extra resilience, ferocity or speed at the moment you need it. Timing those runes well is the heart of playing them, turning an already-stubborn army into an unstoppable one.
They're one of two great duardin armies in the realms, and the contrast is delightful. Where the Fyreslayers grind it out on foot, their cousins take to the skies — see our Kharadron Overlords army analysis for gunpowder and airships, or the massed regiments of the Cities of Sigmar who often fight alongside them.
Key Unit Roles (What You'll Commonly Need)
Forget memorising every warscroll. Think in jobs:
1) The Wall (durable battleline)
Vulkite Berzerkers and similar warriors who hold the centre, soak punishment, and refuse to die. Your stubborn core.
2) The Hammer (elite hitters)
Hearthguard Berzerkers and heavier units to crack tough targets and deliver the killing blow.
3) The Monster (Magmadroth riders)
A fire-breathing Magmadroth ridden by a Runefather or Runeson — a tough, hard-hitting centrepiece and a great focal point.
4) The Priests (runes and buffs)
Runemasters and battlesmiths who activate your ur-gold runes and keep the army fighting at full strength.
Getting Started the Smart Way
Building Fyreslayers from scratch? Being a compact army, you don't need many boxes. Aim for a tough core:
Step 1: A block of Vulkite Berzerkers
- Your durable, objective-holding heart. Stubborn, hard-hitting, and the foundation of the force.
Step 2: A unit of Hearthguard
- Your elite hammer for cracking tougher targets and anchoring a key fight.
Step 3: A Magmadroth
- One fire-breathing monster centrepiece to add punch, presence and a spectacular paint project.
Step 4: A priest
- A Runemaster or battlesmith to activate your runes and buff the army at the crucial moment.
Cover those four jobs and you've got a stubborn, hard-hitting force in just a handful of boxes. New to the brushes? Our beginner painting guide will get those fiery orange crests and bronze runes started.
Common Beginner Mistakes (Avoid These)
- Forgetting your runes. Activating them at the right moment is the whole game — don't waste them.
- Over-extending. You're slow, so a stranded unit can be picked off before help arrives.
- Ignoring objectives. Your resilience is wasted if you're not sitting on the points.
- Charging blindly. Pick your fights — you want to grind the enemy down, not chase them.
Who the Fyreslayers are For
"Choose the Fyreslayers if you want an incredibly durable, stubborn melee army that holds the line and refuses to break — a compact band of gold-hungry dwarves with fire in their veins. Give them a miss if you crave speed, ranged firepower, or a large model count; this is an anvil, not a racing car. Fyreslayers reward patience, smart rune timing, and picking your ground. Stand firm — and let them break on you."
