You know the drill. Twelve browser tabs, a spreadsheet, a calculator and a growing suspicion that you have bought three HQs and no troops. Planning a Warhammer 40,000 army should be the fun bit. Usually it feels like doing your tax return with a Space Marine glaring at you.
So we rebuilt MOAB, the Mother of Army Builders, from the ground up. The new and improved MOAB army builder lets you plan, price and buy a whole army in one go, with every deal worked out as you build.

Step 1: Pick your army
Every faction is in there, from the Imperium to the xenos to the forces of Chaos. Space Marines get a card for every chapter, so Ultramarines, Blood Angels, Space Wolves and friends each have their own starting point, and every chapter still counts towards the same Space Marines bundle. Chaos fans get the same treatment for the legions.
New to the hobby? Our guide what is Warhammer 40k covers the basics, and you can browse every 40k faction if you are still choosing a side.
Step 2: Set a budget
Pick a size, Combat Patrol, a small army or something that will need its own postcode, then slide the budget to suit. MOAB keeps a running total as you go and tells you exactly how much you have left. No more nasty surprises at the checkout.
Step 3: Fill my army (or do it yourself)
Not sure where to start? Hit Fill my army and MOAB suggests a list that fits your budget: a leader, a core of troops, something big to anchor the army and the hobby essentials you will actually need to build and paint it. Keep what you like, swap the rest, or ignore it completely and pick every kit by hand.

Watch the savings stack up
As you add kits, the meters in the army summary fill up so you can see every deal as it lands:
- Bundle deal: build a bundle of kits and the discount comes off automatically.
- Free UK shipping: the meter tells you when your order ships free.
- You save vs RRP: the grand total of everything above, in plain pounds and pence.
Built for your phone
Most of you plan armies on the sofa, on the bus or in the queue at the pub, so MOAB works properly on a phone. Kits sit in compact rows so you can see a whole army at a glance, the site header slips out of the way as you scroll, and your army sheet is one tap away.

Save it, share it, buy it
Give your army a name and MOAB saves it on your device, so you can come back to it later. When you are happy, one button puts the whole army in your basket.
Out of stock? Many Games Workshop kits can be back-ordered right inside MOAB. We order them in from Games Workshop, usually within 2–4 weeks, and every kit is clearly marked so you know what you are getting and when.
How to build your first army with MOAB
Step 1: Choose your faction
- Tap the card for your army or chapter. If you are starting out, Space Marines are easy to learn and easy to paint.
Step 2: Set your budget
- Start with a Combat Patrol if you are new. Our guide to Warhammer 40k starter sets helps you pick a size.
Step 3: Fill my army, then make it yours
- Let MOAB suggest a list, then swap kits until it looks like your army.
Step 4: Add to basket
- Check the meters and check out.
Final thought: building an army should be about the models, not the maths. MOAB does the sums and finds the deals. All you have to do is choose a side, and maybe clear some shelf space.
