Disney Lorcana Rarities Explained — Plus Collecting Tips for Beginners

on

So you've cracked your first booster pack, you're holding a fistful of glittering Disney characters, and you have absolutely no idea whether you've struck gold or just pulled the cardboard equivalent of a participation trophy. Don't worry — every collector starts here.

Disney Lorcana uses one of the cleanest rarity systems in the trading card hobby, and once you know what to look for, you can read a card's rarity in about two seconds. This guide breaks down every tier, how to spot it, and what it means for your collection — followed by some no-nonsense advice for getting started without emptying your wallet.

How to Read a Lorcana Card's Rarity

Every Lorcana card has a small symbol at the bottom-centre of the card. That symbol tells you the rarity. There's even a neat bit of design logic baked in: the rarer the card, the more sides its symbol has. A circle becomes a triangle, becomes a pentagon, becomes a hexagon, and so on.

The colours climb too — bronze, silver, gold, then rainbow — a bit like medals at a very expensive sports day.

The Rarity Levels

Lorcana now has eight standard rarity tiers, plus a separate category for promos. Here they are, from most common to rarest:

1. Common

  • Symbol: grey circle
  • The bread and butter of every pack — you'll get roughly six per booster.
  • Low monetary value, but the backbone of any deck. Don't sneer at them.

2. Uncommon

  • Symbol: white open book
  • Around three per pack. These start introducing keywords and strategy.
  • Still inexpensive, but more useful for shaping how a deck actually plays.

3. Rare

  • Symbol: bronze triangle
  • Generally more powerful, and the first tier where the odd card starts holding real value.
  • Most packs guarantee at least two cards of Rare or higher.

4. Super Rare

  • Symbol: silver diamond (four-sided)
  • Stronger effects, splashier art, and a step up in collector appeal.

5. Legendary

  • Symbol: gold pentagon (five-sided)
  • The top of the "pullable in any pack" tiers and home to many of the game's marquee, competitively powerful cards.

6. Epic (new — added in the Fabled set, 2025)

  • Symbol: a new rainbow-coloured icon
  • Sits between Legendary and Enchanted in rarity.
  • Features existing card art expanded into a borderless "open-air" frame, with rainbow foiling and a glossy coating.
  • Lives in the pack's foil slot, so it's a rarer-but-realistic pull. Early estimates put Epics at roughly 1 in 100 packs.

7. Enchanted

  • Symbol: rainbow hexagon (six-sided)
  • The long-standing chase tier and where most of Lorcana's secondary-market money lives.
  • Borderless alternate full art with the signature rainbow "Inkwash" foil treatment. Gameplay is identical to the standard card — you're paying purely for the looks.
  • Always foil, and found in the foil slot rather than the standard rare slots. Popular characters routinely trade in the hundreds raw, and top graded copies have pushed into four figures.

8. Iconic (new — added in the Fabled set, 2025)

  • Symbol: a rainbow octagon (eight-sided)
  • The new apex of Lorcana collecting — rarer than Enchanted.
  • True "collector trophy" cards: full-bleed alternate illustrations, special foiling, and raised, 3D hot-stamped textures you can actually feel.
  • Extremely scarce. At launch only two existed in the entire game (Mickey and Minnie Mouse), and they command premium prices to match.

Promo Cards (a category of their own)

  • Handed out at Disney events, tournaments, Set Championships, and inside gift sets.
  • They use their own symbols and numbering separate from the main sets, so they sit outside the eight-tier ladder.
  • Value swings wildly depending on the card and how it was distributed.

A Quick Word on Foils and Pack Odds

Knowing how a pack is built helps you understand what you're actually paying for. A typical booster contains roughly:

  • 6 Common
  • 3 Uncommon
  • 2 Rare or better
  • 1 foil card

Foils have a shiny metallic finish but play identically to their non-foil versions — nearly every standard card exists in both. The catch: that single foil slot is also where the rarest treatments (Epic, Enchanted, Iconic) show up, which is exactly why chasing them is so addictive.

Collecting Advice for Beginners

Step 1: Decide what kind of collector you are

Your goal changes everything you buy:

  • Player — you mostly want functional cards to build decks.
  • Set collector — you want one of everything from a set.
  • Chase collector — you're hunting the shiny Enchanteds and Iconics.
  • Flipper — you're buying to resell.

Be honest about which one you are before you spend a penny.

Step 2: Buy singles for what you want, packs for the fun

  • Packs are gambling. Singles are shopping. If there's a specific card you need, buying it as a single is almost always cheaper than ripping packs hoping it falls out.
  • Buy sealed product (packs/boxes) for the experience of opening — not as a reliable way to get a particular card.

Step 3: Start with a starter or gift set

  • They have fixed, known contents, often include a guaranteed foil or promo, and teach you the game.
  • It's the cheapest, lowest-risk on-ramp into the hobby.

Step 4: Protect everything from day one

  • Penny sleeves for bulk and commons.
  • Sleeve + toploader (a rigid plastic holder) for anything valuable.
  • A binder for your set collection.
  • Always handle cards by the edges — fingerprints and bent corners kill value.

Step 5: Treat foils with extra care

  • Foils curl in heat and humidity. Store them flat, away from direct sunlight and radiators.
  • Double-sleeve your high-value foils for serious protection.

Step 6: Remember that condition is king

  • For resale, Near Mint commands the premium. A scuffed or played card drops in value fast.
  • This is why edge-handling and sleeving matter from the moment a card leaves the pack.

Step 7: Only grade your genuinely valuable cards

  • Professional grading (slabbing) makes sense for high-value chase cards — Enchanteds, Iconics, sought-after promos.
  • Grading fees can easily exceed the entire value of a common, so don't bother for cheap cards.

A Few Extra Tips to Spend Smarter

  • Mind the reprints. Fabled showed that Lorcana will happily reprint popular staples. Don't overpay for a playable card that might get reprinted — the unique chase cards (Enchanted, Iconic) tend to hold value far better.
  • Check prices before you buy. Use Cardmarket (best for the UK and Europe) and TCGplayer, and look at recent sold prices rather than hopeful asking prices.
  • Watch out for fakes. Buy sealed product and singles from reputable retailers. If an expensive card is suspiciously cheap, be sceptical.
  • Set a budget. The chase is endless by design. Decide what you'll spend each month and stick to it.
  • Support your local game store. It's the best place for advice, trades, singles — and somewhere to actually sit down and play.

Final Thought

Lorcana's rarity system rewards you for paying attention: a quick glance at the bottom of a card tells you whether you've pulled a workhorse common or a rainbow-foiled trophy. Learn the symbols, protect your cards, buy with a plan, and the hobby stays fun rather than financially terrifying.

Now go forth and check the bottoms of your cards. There might be an octagon hiding in there.
