Flesh-eater Courts: Army Analysis

Flesh-eater Courts: Army Analysis

Who are the Flesh-eater Courts?

Picture a gallant kingdom of noble knights, a glittering court, banquets of roast swan and fine wine. Now strip away the delusion: it is a warren of cannibal ghouls, the 'wine' is blood, the 'swan' is a corpse, and their shining king is a slavering monster who genuinely believes he is royalty. The Flesh-eater Courts are the finest tragic gothic-horror hook in the Grand Alliance Death — a fast, numerous, self-reviving ghoul horde that thinks it is a chivalric order, and one of the most characterful ways into Warhammer Age of Sigmar.

The Core Fantasy

You are not commanding an army so much as feeding a delusion. The Abhorrant Ghoul Kings believe they are righteous monarchs, their ghoul packs share the madness, and the whole shambling court marches to war convinced it is on a noble crusade. In truth you field a tide of ravenous ghouls that keeps coming back for seconds — models slain in the morning are shambling out of the crypts by the afternoon — and above them wheel enormous flying monsters to headline the horror.

Expect:

  • Numbers: cheap, fast Crypt Ghouls in packs, swarming objectives and outnumbering nearly everything.
  • Resilience through return: slain ghouls are summoned or brought back through the delusion, so the horde rarely stays dead.
  • Monsters: Royal Terrorgheists and Royal Zombie Dragons as terrifying, screaming centrepieces.
  • Fragility per model: individually your ghouls are paper, but there are always more of them.
  • Gothic theatre: an army that role-plays as Arthurian knights while eating the dead.

How They Play on the Tabletop

Flesh-eater Courts are an attrition-and-tempo army wearing a horror mask. You flood the board with bodies, contest more objectives than your opponent can physically kill, and lean on returning models to keep the pressure relentless. Your monsters provide the hitting power and the fear factor; your ghouls provide the numbers and the staying power. Played well it feels like a tide that simply will not recede.

What you'll love:

  • Board presence: a lot of models, a lot of wounds spread wide, a lot of objectives held.
  • Comebacks: returning and summoning ghouls means a wiped unit is rarely gone for good.
  • Big-monster drama: a Terrorgheist scream or a dragon's charge can swing a game on its own.
  • Speed: ghouls move quickly for a horde, so you reach objectives and enemy lines fast.

What can bite you:

  • Low individual toughness: concentrated firepower and hard-hitting elites cut ghouls down in droves.
  • Leadership matters: lose your key characters and the delusion (and your returns) starts to falter.
  • Model count: a wide horde means more movement trays, more dice, and longer turns.
  • Elite match-ups: armies that shrug off chip damage can grind you out if you overcommit.
Two Faces of Death: The Ghoul Horde and the Vampire Dynasties

Death is not one flavour of undead, and the Flesh-eater Courts make the point beautifully. Where the Soulblight Gravelords are cold, calculating vampire aristocrats commanding disciplined legions of skeletons and zombies from on high, the Courts are the mad, feral mirror image — deluded cannibals who genuinely believe the aristocratic fantasy the vampires merely perform. One dynasty knows exactly what it is; the other has forgotten entirely. If you fancy the contrast, our Soulblight Gravelords army analysis lays out the vampires' side of the graveyard.

Thematically, the Courts got a huge lift with the return of Ushoran, the Carrion King — the god-figure at the rotten heart of the delusion. He is the reason the madness spreads: a monstrous 'saviour' whose very presence bends reality into the shared dream. Building a Court around that idea gives your whole collection a story, not just a colour scheme.

Key Unit Roles (What You'll Commonly Need)

1) The Screens and Chaff (Crypt Ghouls): your bread-and-butter horde. Cheap, fast, numerous, and endlessly returning — they hold objectives, tarpit the enemy, and soak damage so your monsters get where they need to be.

2) The Heavy Infantry (Crypt Horrors): beefier, hard-hitting ghoul-brutes that provide the muscle your basic packs lack. Your anvil-and-hammer in one.

3) The Fast Flyers (Crypt Flayers): winged terrors that dart across the board to threaten backfield units, war machines and support pieces before they can do their work.

4) The Centrepiece Monsters (Royal Terrorgheist / Royal Zombie Dragon): your showpieces and finishers — huge flying monsters that project fear, crack tough units, and dominate a flank.

5) The Enablers (Abhorrant Ghoul Kings and Archregents, Varghulf and Crypt Ghast Courtiers, and Ushoran): the beating heart of the army. They lead, buff, and above all keep the delusion alive so your ghouls return turn after turn. Protect them.

Getting Started the Smart Way

Step 1 — Build the horde first. The Courts live and die on ghoul count, so lead with the cheap infantry.

  • Start with a solid block of Crypt Ghouls — they are your objective-holders and your returning tide.
  • Batch-building them early gets the bulk of your model count done fast.

Step 2 — Add a leader and a monster. One character to anchor the delusion, one monster to headline it.

  • An Abhorrant Ghoul King gives you your buffs and your theme in a single kit.
  • A Royal Terrorgheist or Royal Zombie Dragon gives you a showpiece and a genuine threat.

Step 3 — Fill the roles. Round the force out with muscle and mobility.

  • Crypt Horrors for hitting power, Crypt Flayers for speed and reach.
  • Add a Courtier or two to squeeze extra value from your ghoul packs.

Step 4 — Learn to paint the tide. A horde only looks intimidating if it is finished, so build a quick, repeatable scheme.

Common Beginner Mistakes (Avoid These)
  • Too few ghouls: the whole army leans on numbers and returns — a thin horde folds fast.
  • Exposing your characters: lose the delusion-keepers and your resilience evaporates. Keep them screened.
  • Overcommitting the monsters: a Terrorgheist charging alone into an elite unit is an expensive snack. Support it.
  • Ignoring the returns: forget your model-return mechanics and you throw away the army's best trick.
  • Painting one ghoul at a time: batch-paint or you will never finish the horde. Assembly-line it.
Who the Flesh-eater Courts Are For

"Choose the Flesh-eater Courts if you want a fast, self-reviving horde with cinematic monsters and the best tragic story in the game — a mad court that thinks it is noble while it feasts on the dead. Give them a miss if you dislike painting big model counts, or want an elite, low-body-count army that wins by quality rather than sheer relentless numbers."

Final thought: the Flesh-eater Courts are the only army where losing half your force to the enemy's guns is fine — because in their heads, that was simply the first course.

Frequently Asked Questions
Are Flesh-eater Courts good for beginners?

They are beginner-friendly in playstyle — a forgiving horde that wants to swarm objectives and bring models back — but you should be happy painting a fair number of ghouls. If batch-painting an army does not put you off, they are a great first Death force.

Do I need lots of models to play Flesh-eater Courts?

Yes, more than most armies. Numbers are the whole point — cheap Crypt Ghouls are your objective-holders and your returning tide. You will want a healthy block of them, backed by a monster or two for punch.

What monsters can Flesh-eater Courts field?

The signature centrepieces are the Royal Terrorgheist and the Royal Zombie Dragon — huge flying monsters that project fear and crack tough units. They are also spectacular painting projects and the natural showpieces of any Court.

Who is Ushoran in Flesh-eater Courts?

Ushoran, the Carrion King, is the god-figure at the heart of the Courts' shared delusion, recently returned to the setting. His presence spreads and deepens the madness that convinces the ghouls they are noble knights, making him a natural thematic centrepiece for a collection.

How do Flesh-eater Courts fit into Grand Alliance Death?

They are the feral, deluded counterpoint to the aristocratic Soulblight Gravelords. Both are undead armies within Death, but the Courts are a mad cannibal ghoul horde where the vampires are cold, disciplined nobility. Two very different flavours of the same graveyard.
