Grey Knights: Army Analysis

Posted By Jack Angel on
Who are the Grey Knights?

The Imperium's best-kept secret, the Grey Knights are a chapter of silver-armoured Space Marines created for one purpose: hunting daemons. Every single one of them is a trained psyker, which makes them utterly unique among the Emperor's warriors. They're elite, few in number, and absolutely lethal against the warp — the army you call when the Chaos Daemons come knocking. With Warhammer 40,000 11th Edition in full swing, the daemon-hunters are well worth a look.

The Core Fantasy

Grey Knights are the elite psychic strike force of the grimdark. You bring a small, immaculate army of teleporting warrior-mystics who appear exactly where they're needed, unleash devastating psychic power, and vanish the threat before it can spread. Quality over quantity, with a supernatural twist.

Expect:

  • A compact, elite force where every model is a psyker
  • Superb mobility — teleporting strikes that ignore the usual rules of distance
  • Brutal performance against daemons and elite enemies
  • Resilient, hard-hitting infantry that punch well above their numbers
How They Play on the Tabletop

The Grey Knights plan is surgical: hold back, pick your moment, then teleport a hammer-blow onto the perfect target. Your army is small but flexible, blending shooting, psychic powers and elite melee. You won't out-body anyone — you win by being in the right place at the right time and hitting far harder than your model count suggests.

What you'll love:

  • Mobility: teleporting lets you strike anywhere and rewrite the board state
  • Flexibility: every unit can shoot, fight and cast to some degree
  • Specialism: against daemons and elites, few armies are deadlier

What can bite you:

  • Numbers: hordes can swamp you and contest more ground than you can hold
  • Cost: each model is precious, so losses sting
  • Spread: a small elite force struggles to be everywhere on a busy board
Every Warrior a Psyker

This is what sets the Grey Knights apart from every other Space Marine force. Where a normal chapter fields a single librarian, your entire army crackles with psychic power — buffs, mortal-wound attacks, movement tricks and defensive wards woven through every unit. It makes them flexible, characterful and a real puzzle to play well.

It also makes them the perfect counter to the warp. If you love the idea of an all-psychic army but fancy seeing the other side of that coin, our Thousand Sons army analysis covers Chaos's own sorcerous legion — the Grey Knights' dark mirror in every sense.

Key Unit Roles (What You'll Commonly Need)

Forget memorising every datasheet. Think in jobs:

1) The Strike Force (core infantry)

Versatile power-armoured psykers who teleport in, shoot, fight and cast. The flexible heart of the army.

2) The Heavies (elite terminators)

Tougher, hard-hitting elites for cracking priority targets and anchoring a key fight.

3) The Specialists (characters and casters)

Powerful heroes who supercharge your psychic powers, hand out buffs, and lead from the front.

4) The Support (vehicles and fast elements)

Transports and faster units to grab objectives, screen, and add a little extra reach to a compact force.

Getting Started the Smart Way

Building Grey Knights from scratch? Being an elite army, you don't need many boxes. Aim for a flexible, hard-hitting core:

Step 1: A solid block of core infantry

  • Your versatile, teleporting heart. Reliable, flexible, and the foundation everything supports.

Step 2: A unit of elite terminators

  • Your premium hitters for deleting tough targets — and a brilliant centrepiece to paint.

Step 3: A powerful character

  • A hero to amplify your psychic powers and anchor the army's plan.

Step 4: A transport or fast unit

  • Some extra mobility to grab objectives and stop faster armies running rings around you.

Cover those four jobs and you've got a compact, lethal force that plays to its strengths. New to the hobby side? Our build-and-paint guide will get those gleaming silver schemes started.

Common Beginner Mistakes (Avoid These)
  • Teleporting in too early. Patience is power — wait for the moment your strike lands hardest.
  • Spreading too thin. Concentrate your small force and win where it counts.
  • Forgetting your psychic powers. They're half the army's identity — use them every turn.
  • Trading recklessly. Every model is precious, so don't throw elites away for minor gains.
Who the Grey Knights are For

"Choose the Grey Knights if you want a compact, elite, supremely mobile army of psychic warriors that teleports across the board and excels at hunting daemons and elites. Give them a miss if you crave horde numbers or a forgiving army that can soak up mistakes; this is a precision instrument, not a sledgehammer. Grey Knights reward patience, timing and clever use of psychic power. Strike from nowhere — and leave nothing behind."
