What are the Chaos Daemons?
When the warp spills into reality, this is what crawls out. Chaos Daemons are the living embodiment of the four Ruinous Powers — Khorne, Tzeentch, Nurgle and Slaanesh — made flesh and set loose on the galaxy. They're equal parts horror-film nightmare and gleeful chaos, and they make superb allies for any Chaos Space Marines force or a striking standalone army in their own right. With Warhammer 40,000 11th Edition in full swing, there's never been a better time to summon something unspeakable.
The Core Fantasy
Daemons are the army of unholy variety. You can field a single god's host for a laser-focused theme, or blend all four into a riot of colour, claws and madness. From cheap, swarming rank-and-file to colossal Greater Daemons, you bring reality-bending models that play by their own rules.
Expect:
- Four wildly different flavours under one banner
- Cheap horde units alongside towering Greater Daemons
- Fast, aggressive board presence and deep-striking threats
- Psychic tricks and warp-fuelled shenanigans aplenty

How They Play on the Tabletop
Daemons want to get up the board fast and overwhelm you from several directions at once. They mix expendable swarms that tar-pit and screen with monstrous hitters that fold the enemy in melee. Many units arrive from reserve or surge forward unnaturally quickly, so your opponent rarely gets to fight on their own terms.
What you'll love:
- Variety: four gods means four totally different ways to play
- Aggression: you dictate the pace and pick your fights
- Spectacle: few armies look as gloriously unhinged on the table
What can bite you:
- Fragility: many bodies lean on invulnerable saves and sheer numbers rather than armour
- Swinginess: warp-powered effects can be brilliant or backfire
- Focus: with so much choice, an unthemed list can end up doing nothing especially well
Four Gods, One Army
Your first big decision is who you serve. Each power plays to a distinct fantasy, and each has a full mortal legion to match if you catch the bug: Khorne for relentless melee, Tzeentch for sorcery and trickery, Nurgle for grinding resilience, and Slaanesh for blistering speed.
Mono-god armies are tight, thematic and easy to learn. Mixed-god “soup” trades a little focus for an enormous toolbox — fast assassins, tar-pit hordes, psychic batteries and titanic monsters, all in one list. Whichever way you lean, daemons reward bold, committed play over cautious dithering.
Key Unit Roles (What You'll Commonly Need)
Forget memorising every datasheet. Think in jobs:
1) The Swarm (cheap horde units)
Bloodletters, Plaguebearers, Horrors and Daemonettes to screen, hold objectives, and bog down the enemy. Numbers are your first line of everything.
2) The Monsters (Greater Daemons and big beasts)
Your centrepiece killers — the Bloodthirsters and Great Unclean Ones whose job is to land in combat and wreck whatever they touch.
3) The Specialists (heralds and support)
Smaller characters who buff your hordes, fuel your psychic powers, and keep the whole warp-engine humming. Pick the ones matching your chosen god.
4) The Fast Threats (deep strikers and harassers)
Quick, aggressive units that arrive where it hurts, grab late objectives, and force your opponent to react instead of plan.

Getting Started the Smart Way
Building Daemons from scratch? Pick one god first — it keeps the army focused, affordable and easy to learn. Aim for:
Step 1: Pick a single god
- Choose the power whose models and playstyle excite you most, and build your whole starter force around them.
Step 2: Two units of rank-and-file
- Your screening, objective-grabbing core. Cheap, numerous, and the foundation everything else supports.
Step 3: A Greater Daemon
- One big, terrifying centrepiece to anchor the army and give your opponent something to genuinely fear.
Step 4: A herald or two
- Cheap support characters to buff your swarms and keep the warp magic flowing.
Nail those four jobs and you've got a themed, aggressive army you can actually win with. New to the brushes? Our build-and-paint guide covers the essentials — and daemons are a riot to paint, because bright and bizarre is the whole point.
Common Beginner Mistakes (Avoid These)
- Spreading across all four gods too soon. Start mono-god; mix only once you know what each power does.
- Holding units in reserve forever. Daemons want to apply pressure — commit to the attack.
- Relying on luck. Warp effects are swingy, so build a plan that works even when the dice sulk.
- Forgetting objectives. Slaughter is lovely, but you still win on points — keep those swarms scoring.
Who the Chaos Daemons are For
"Choose Chaos Daemons if you want variety, aggression, and an army that can be anything from a focused single-god host to a chaotic four-power circus — swarms, monsters and warp-magic in equal measure. Give them a miss if you prefer durable, predictable, armour-saved soldiers; daemons live and die by speed, numbers and nerve. They reward bold commitment and punish timidity. Summon wisely — the warp is always watching."
