In the 15th century, European artillery developed rapidly. The main guns were siege bombards of calibre 350-400 mm, the biggest ones were 630 mm-calibre bombards weighted 13,5 tons. Due to the low initial velocity of shells (up to 200 m/s) and the rapid drop in impact energy, bombards had to be placed close to the fortress walls under shields.
