Who are the Imperial Agents?
Behind the Imperium's vast armies works a shadow war, and the Imperial Agents are the ones who fight it. This is the Emperor's hidden hand — Inquisitors and their retinues, deadly Assassins, silent Sisters of Silence, hardy voidsmen and more — a toolbox of specialists who operate where regiments cannot. They make superb allies for almost any Imperial force, or a characterful covert army in their own right. With Warhammer 40,000 11th Edition in full swing, the Emperor's spies and assassins are well worth a look.
The Core Fantasy
Imperial Agents are the specialist toolbox of the grimdark: a flexible roster of unique operatives, each built to solve a specific problem the regular army can't. This is the fantasy of cloak-and-dagger warfare — the perfect assassin, the right inquisitor, the precise counter slipped in at exactly the right moment.
Expect:
- A varied roster of distinctive, characterful specialists
- Assassins capable of removing enemy characters in a single strike
- Anti-psyker tools that shut down enemy sorcery
- Outstanding flexibility as allies to other Imperial armies

How They Play on the Tabletop
The Imperial Agents plan is all about the right tool at the right time: bring specialists to counter your opponent's key pieces, snipe out their characters, and deny their tricks. As a standalone force they're a clever, skirmish-flavoured army; as allies, they're the surgical scalpel that completes a bigger Imperial force.
What you'll love:
- Precision: assassins and specialists remove the targets that matter most
- Flexibility: a roster that can counter almost anything
- Synergy: they elevate any Imperial army they join
What can bite you:
- Weight: as a pure standalone army they can lack raw muscle and bodies
- Situational tools: some specialists shine only against the right target
- Fragility: precision operatives don't soak punishment well
The Emperor's Hidden Hand
What defines the Imperial Agents is variety and precision. Few armies offer this many distinctive, single-purpose units — an assassin to behead an enemy warlord, a Culexus to smother psykers, an inquisitor and warband to do the dirty work. Played well, you always seem to have the perfect answer ready.
They're at their very best supporting a larger Imperial force. Pair them with elite allies like the Grey Knights or the xenos-hunting Deathwatch and you get a force that can counter quite literally anything the galaxy throws at it.
Key Unit Roles (What You'll Commonly Need)
Forget memorising every datasheet. Think in jobs:
1) The Assassins (precision killers)
Lone operatives who slip through the lines and delete enemy characters or key models. Your scalpel.
2) The Inquisition (warbands and characters)
Inquisitors and their retinues — flexible, characterful units that buff allies and tackle special objectives.
3) The Anti-psykers (warp denial)
Sisters of Silence and similar units that shut down enemy psychic powers and protect your force.
4) The Allies (the main army)
Agents shine alongside friends — lean on a larger Imperial detachment for the bodies and big guns.

Getting Started the Smart Way
Building Imperial Agents from scratch? They're often best as a support detachment, so start small and purposeful:
Step 1: An assassin
- A single, brilliant operative that immediately gives you a way to remove enemy characters. Great value and great fun.
Step 2: An inquisitor and warband
- Your characterful core — flexible bodies that handle objectives and special jobs.
Step 3: An anti-psyker unit
- Sisters of Silence to shut down enemy sorcery — a superb tool in the current game.
Step 4: A main Imperial army to join
- Pick a larger Imperial force to attach to, and let your agents be the precision element that completes it.
Cover those jobs and you've got a flexible toolkit that lifts any Imperial army. New to the hobby side? Our build-and-paint guide will get you started — and these characterful models are a joy to paint.
Common Beginner Mistakes (Avoid These)
- Fielding them alone expecting a heavyweight. They're a scalpel, not a sledgehammer — lean on allies.
- Wasting an assassin. Hold it for the target that truly matters, not the first thing you see.
- Ignoring their counters. Anti-psyker and anti-character tools win games — deploy them deliberately.
- Overexposing fragile specialists. Keep precious operatives protected until their moment comes.
Who the Imperial Agents are For
"Choose the Imperial Agents if you love precision, variety, and the cloak-and-dagger side of the Imperium — assassins, inquisitors and specialists who counter any threat and elevate any Imperial army. Give them a miss if you want a heavyweight standalone force that wins through sheer muscle; this is finesse, not brute strength. Agents reward clever target priority and smart alliances. Strike from the shadows — the Emperor is always watching."
