Leagues of Votann: Army Analysis

Posted By Jack Angel on
Who are the Leagues of Votann?

Neither Imperium nor Chaos, the Leagues of Votann answer to no one but their own ancestors and their own bottom line. The Kin — descendants of humanity who carved out a home in the brutal galactic core long ago — are gruff, pragmatic, and armed with the finest kit money can buy. Think space dwarves with ancestral AI, industrial firepower, and a grudge ledger longer than your arm. Veteran hobbyists will know them by an older name, too: the Squats are well and truly back. With Warhammer 40,000 11th Edition in full swing, the galaxy's grumpiest prospectors are well worth a look.

The Core Fantasy

Leagues of Votann are the premium boutique army of the grimdark: few in number, but every single model is superb. You don't drown opponents in bodies — you bring a small, elite, exquisitely equipped force, mark the enemy's best units for judgement, and methodically collect what you're owed.

Expect:

  • Elite, low-model-count lists where quality trumps quantity
  • Tough infantry with excellent armour and serious staying power
  • Reliable, hard-hitting firepower with brutal armour penetration
  • A signature grudge mechanic that makes you deadlier against priority targets
How They Play on the Tabletop

The Votann plan is calm and methodical: hold a strong position, lay down disciplined, accurate fire, and grow steadily more lethal against the targets that matter. Unlike the glass-cannon Aeldari, your elites are built to take a punch as well as throw one. You won't be everywhere at once — you've simply not got the bodies for it — but where you choose to fight, you fight extremely well, and you're a nightmare for elite and monster-heavy armies.

What you'll love:

  • Quality: every model pulls its weight, and then some
  • Durability: your infantry are tough enough to anchor any line
  • Big-game hunting: your grudge mechanic eats elite units and monsters alive

What can bite you:

  • Low numbers: hordes can swamp you and contest more ground than you can hold
  • Mobility: you're not the fastest, so spread-out objectives are a real headache
  • Every loss stings: with so few models, you can't afford to trade carelessly
Hold a Grudge, Settle the Score

This is the army's signature, and it's a brilliant one. The Kin mark their enemies through the Eye of the Ancestors: the more a foe wrongs you — or simply proves worth killing — the more your whole army fixates on bringing it down. In practice, your firepower gets progressively, ruthlessly better against high-value targets, turning enemy elites, characters and monsters into liabilities. Where other armies fear a big scary centrepiece, the Votann look at it and see an outstanding debt.

It's a faction that rewards cool, calculated play: pick your targets, weather the early pressure, and let the judgement build. If you enjoy out-thinking flashier opponents and grinding down their best units, few armies are more satisfying. Fancy seeing how the elite approach compares with the swarms? Our Tyranids army analysis is the polar opposite philosophy in action.

Key Unit Roles (What You'll Commonly Need)

Forget memorising every datasheet. Think in jobs:

1) The Anchor (durable core infantry)

Tough, well-armed Kin who hold the centre, soak fire, and lay down reliable shooting. The backbone every Votann list is built around.

2) The Heavies (elite hitters)

Premium heavy-armour units and war machines whose job is to delete priority targets — especially anything you've marked for judgement.

3) The Outriders (fast recon)

Quick, mobile units to grab early objectives, harass flanks, and partly offset the army's lack of speed. Your answer to being outmanoeuvred.

4) The Specialists (characters and support)

Warlords, engineers and ancestral seers who buff your shooting, repair your kit, and keep the grudge machine humming. Pick the ones that match your plan.

Getting Started the Smart Way

Building Votann from scratch? Good news — being an elite army, you don't need many boxes to field a real force. Aim for a tough, focused core:

Step 1: A solid block of core infantry

  • Your durable, objective-holding heart. Reliable, tough, and the foundation everything else supports.

Step 2: An elite heavy unit

  • Your premium hitters for cracking tough targets — and a brilliant centrepiece to paint.

Step 3: A fast recon unit

  • Some much-needed mobility to grab early objectives and stop faster armies running rings around you.

Step 4: A warlord or support character

  • A leader to buff your firepower and anchor the army's grudge-fuelled game plan.

Cover those four jobs and you've got a compact, hard-hitting force that punches well above its model count. New to the hobby side? Our build-and-paint guide walks you through the basics — and Votann's industrial, armour-plated look is wonderfully satisfying to paint.

Common Beginner Mistakes (Avoid These)
  • Spreading too thin. You don't have the bodies to be everywhere — concentrate your force and win where it counts.
  • Trading recklessly. Every model is precious, so don't throw away elites for minor gains.
  • Wasting the grudge. Your judgement mechanic is the whole point — aim it at the targets that actually matter.
  • Neglecting mobility. Without a recon element, fast armies will dictate the game and grab objectives unopposed.
Who the Leagues of Votann are For

"Choose the Leagues of Votann if you want a compact, elite, tremendously durable army that out-thinks and out-shoots flashier foes — and excels at hunting down the enemy's biggest threats. Give them a miss if you crave horde numbers, blistering speed, or a forgiving army that can afford mistakes; every model here has to earn its keep. Votann reward patience, target priority, and a good head for grudges. The Ancestors keep score — and the Kin always collect."
