Orruk Warclans Army Analysis

Orruk Warclans: Army Analysis

Who are the Orruk Warclans?

The Orruk Warclans are the green tide of the Mortal Realms: brutal, boisterous orruks who worship the twin-god Gorkamorka and live to bellow a good Waaagh! One battletome gathers three very different cultures under that banner, so the Orruk Warclans range is really three armies in a trench coat. They are the loudest, punchiest faction in Grand Alliance Destruction, and if you like the idea of hitting things very hard while shouting, read on.

-

The Core Fantasy

Pick your flavour of violence. The Warclans give you three distinct fantasies in one box of a faction, all held together by the Waaagh! mechanic that builds up until it detonates into a realm-shaking wave of power. This is not a subtle army. It never wanted to be.

  • Ironjawz: arrogant, heavily armoured melee brutes who genuinely believe the biggest orruk is always right. Elite, hard-charging, expensive per model.
  • Kruleboyz: cunning swamp orruks who win through poison, traps, ambushes and dirty tricks. Shooting and debuffs, not fair fights.
  • Bonesplitterz: frenzied savage orruks, all bone charms and warpaint, who run screaming into the enemy in enormous, giddy numbers.
  • Big Waaagh!: mix all three cultures together and let the collective Waaagh! energy do the heavy lifting.
How They Play on the Tabletop

Broadly, the two headline cultures pull in opposite directions. Ironjawz are elite hammer units that want to charge on turn one, hit like a runaway cart and shrug off the reply thanks to thick armour. Kruleboyz are tricksy: they whittle you down with poisoned Boltboyz, spring ambushes, stack debuffs and pick their fights. Big Waaagh! blends the two and leans on the escalating Waaagh! to reward a full-throttle push up the board. Whichever you run, the plan usually rhymes: build the Waaagh!, then unleash it at the moment it hurts most.

What you'll love:

  • Genuine melee threat: Ironjawz brutes and Gore-gruntas dish out damage that makes opponents wince.
  • A proper payoff mechanic: the Waaagh! is one of the most satisfying buttons in Age of Sigmar to press.
  • A showpiece centrepiece: the Maw-Krusha is a huge flying brute-mount and an absolute table presence.
  • Two armies for the price of one: cunning shooting or armoured smashing, your choice.

What can bite you:

  • Elite model counts: Ironjawz put few bodies on the board, so every lost unit stings.
  • Charge dependency: if the charge whiffs, a melee-first army can feel very exposed.
  • Timing the Waaagh!: fire it too early or too late and your big turn fizzles.
  • Screening discipline: Kruleboyz reward good positioning and punish sloppy movement.
Waaagh! Energy and the Green Tide

The thing that makes the Warclans sing is the Waaagh! itself. It is not just fluff; it is a resource that swells as your orruks fight and then bursts into extra attacks, extra movement and general mayhem. Timed well, it turns a scrappy turn into a game-ender. Learning that rhythm is the whole army, and it is a joy once it clicks.

If you like Destruction's flavour of gleeful chaos, you are spoilt for choice. The grots of the Gloomspite Gitz bring horde swarms and moonlit madness, while the enormous appetites of the Ogor Mawtribes offer big, hungry monsters. The Warclans sit between them: bigger than the gits, more numerous than the ogors, and louder than both.

Key Unit Roles (What You'll Commonly Need)

1) The General (leadership and the Waaagh!): a Megaboss, a Killaboss, or best of all Gordrakk, the Fist of Gork on his Maw-Krusha, to lead the charge and drive the Waaagh!

2) The Hammer (elite melee): Orruk Brutes and Gore-gruntas for Ironjawz; the heavy hitters you point at whatever must die.

3) The Battleline Body (the reliable core): Ardboys for Ironjawz, Gutrippaz for Kruleboyz; the mobs that hold objectives and grind.

4) The Trickery and Shooting (Kruleboyz specialty): Man-skewer Boltboyz for poisoned shots and Hobgrot Slittaz to screen, throw bombs and generally cause bother.

5) The Centrepiece (the monster): a Maw-Krusha, flying in to crush a flank and give your Waaagh! a terrifying focal point.

Getting Started the Smart Way

Step 1: Pick a culture and commit.

  • Choose Ironjawz for armoured melee, Kruleboyz for tricksy shooting, or plan for Big Waaagh! later.
  • Don't try to collect all three at once; you'll spread yourself thin.

Step 2: Anchor around a leader.

  • A Megaboss or Killaboss gives you a general and an early flavour of the army's tricks.
  • Earmark a Maw-Krusha as your eventual showpiece.

Step 3: Build a solid core.

  • A block of battleline (Ardboys or Gutrippaz) plus one hammer unit gives you a real game.
  • Browse the full Age of Sigmar range to see how the pieces fit.

Step 4: Learn to paint the green tide fast.

  • Orruk skin loves contrast-style paints; the brass and yellow of Ironjawz armour comes up quickly over a metal base.
  • Stock up on Warhammer Colour paints and follow our beginner painting guide to batch-paint mobs without losing your mind.
Common Beginner Mistakes (Avoid These)
  • Firing the Waaagh! on instinct: hold it for the turn it wins you the game, not the first turn you can.
  • Charging into a screen: your hammer unit hitting expendable chaff is a wasted turn.
  • Ignoring objectives: orruks want to fight, but Age of Sigmar is won by holding ground.
  • Collecting three cultures at once: pick one, learn it, then expand.
  • Skimping on screens: Hobgrots and cheap mobs keep your big models alive and swinging.
Who the Orruk Warclans Are For

"Choose the Orruk Warclans if you want big, characterful models, a thunderous melee identity and a Waaagh! payoff that feels genuinely brutal to unleash. Give them a miss if you prefer a subtle, footslogging gunline or want to avoid the odd heartbreaking failed charge."

Final thought: the Warclans reward players who commit. Pick your culture, learn the timing of the Waaagh!, and there is nothing in the Mortal Realms quite as satisfying as a mob of orruks arriving exactly where they hurt most.

Frequently Asked Questions
Are Ironjawz and Kruleboyz the same army?

They share the Orruk Warclans battletome and can be fielded together as a Big Waaagh! force, but each also plays as its own distinct army. Ironjawz are armoured melee elites; Kruleboyz are tricksy shooting and poison specialists.

What is the Waaagh! mechanic?

The Waaagh! is the army's signature buff that builds up as your orruks fight, then unleashes a burst of extra attacks, movement and mayhem. Timing it for the right turn is the heart of playing the Warclans well.

Is the Maw-Krusha worth getting?

For most Warclans players it is the centrepiece of choice: a huge flying brute-mount that crushes a flank, anchors your Waaagh! and looks spectacular painted. It is also a fantastic hobby showpiece.

Are Orruk Warclans good for beginners?

Yes, especially Ironjawz. Low model counts make them quick to build and paint, and the aggressive melee plan is easy to learn. The nuance comes in timing the Waaagh! and screening your big units, which you'll pick up with practice.
