Warhammer 40,000 Show: Mike Flanagan Is Writing Henry Cavill's Prime Video Series

Posted By The Loaded Dice Team on

Grimdark just got itself a proper storyteller. Games Workshop's newly published annual report has confirmed that Mike Flanagan – the horror director behind The Haunting of Hill House and Midnight Mass – is writing the long-gestating live-action Warhammer 40,000 series for Prime Video, with Henry Cavill still attached as star and executive producer.

According to the report, Flanagan has already completed story outlines and should, in Games Workshop's words, soon be moving on to script. Trade outlets including Deadline add that he is also in talks to executive produce the Amazon MGM Studios project. In the same breath, Games Workshop tempered expectations, noting that these adaptations will take years to bring successfully to market. Translation: don't cancel your Saturday gaming plans just yet.

What Games Workshop actually confirmed

Cutting through the excitement, here is what is on the record as of this week:

  • Writer: Mike Flanagan is penning the screenplay; outlines are done and script is the next stage.
  • Star and executive producer: Henry Cavill, a genuine, well-documented 40k hobbyist, remains attached in both roles.
  • Home: Prime Video, produced through Amazon MGM Studios alongside partners including Vertigo Entertainment and United Artists.
  • The deal: Amazon and Games Workshop signed their film and television partnership back in December 2023, with creative guidelines since agreed to keep the setting on-brand.
  • The caveat: Games Workshop itself says this will take years, so treat any release-date chatter as guesswork.

Why fans are cautiously buzzing

Flanagan is a canny fit for the 41st Millennium. His stock-in-trade is dread, atmosphere and characters you actually care about before it all goes horribly wrong – which, frankly, is most of a day in the life of an Imperial Guardsman. For a setting built on gothic horror and grim sacrifice rather than clean heroics, a horror storyteller at the keyboard is a reassuring signal.

The community reaction has been a hot talking point across Reddit and the hobby press: broadly excited, with a healthy streak of caution. The recurring refrain, roughly, is a plea for Amazon to do right by Cavill and the source material rather than sand off its edges. Given how protective Games Workshop has been of its IP, the optimists reckon the grimdark is in safe hands.

Our take: pairing a lifelong fan in Cavill with a director who understands fear is about the best hand 40k could have been dealt. But outlines are not episodes, and Games Workshop has all but told us to be patient. Cautious optimism is the correct setting on the dial.

What we still don't know

Plenty, and it is worth being clear about it rather than filling the gaps with rumour:

  • No cast beyond Cavill has been confirmed, and his specific character is still under wraps.
  • No confirmed setting or faction focus – whether it leans Space Marines, Inquisition, or something stranger is anyone's guess.
  • No release window. Anything you see with a firm year attached is speculation, not fact.
What it means for you

Here is the practical bit. A television series is years away, but the curiosity it stirs up is happening now – and every time Cavill mentions his painting desk in an interview, a few more people wander into the hobby. If the show is what finally tempts you (or a mate) off the sofa, there is no reason to wait for episode one.

The Adeptus Astartes are the obvious front door, which is exactly why we wrote a beginner's guide to Space Marines to get you started. From there, browse the Space Marines range, or if you would rather dip a toe than dive in, a starter set or a skirmish-sized Kill Team box is the gentlest way in. Fancy the xenos side of the galaxy instead? The Aeldari are having a moment. And whatever you pick, you will want paints and brushes to bring it to life while the writers do their thing.

A horror maestro writing grimdark for the man who paints his own Custodes on set? We will take those odds. Now we just need Games Workshop's promised patience – and a very large pot of Corax White.
