In the beginning of the 1930s, there was a desire for a high-speed bomber that could outpace contemporary fighter planes. One plane to come to fruition from this desire was the twin-engine bomber Do 17 designed and produced by German company Dornier Flugzeugwerke. Since the beginning of 1939, they produced Do 17Z planes with new “Waffenkopf” type nose part and air-cooled Bramo 323 Fafnir engines. In 1939-1940, they produced about 500 Do 17Z-1 and Do 17Z-2 bombers. They took part in all 1939-1941 Luftwaffe operations – in Polish and French companies, in the Battle of Britain, and also in Balkans and in the Eastern Front.
