Gnarlwood 1 is the darkest tone in the Gnarlwood ladder – dark umber grey-brown. Think of it as deep shadows, recesses and a solid dark basecoat. Warhammer Tone Pro is 150 paints built as 30 colours in five numbered tones, 1 the darkest and 5 the lightest, so choosing a shade or a highlight is a case of counting up or down rather than squinting at paint names.
The Gnarlwood ladder
Tone 1 – darkest: dark umber grey-brown (this pot)
Gnarlwood 2 – dark: between dark umber grey-brown and warm mid brown
Deep shadows and recess shading on warm grey-brown schemes
Wooden hafts, bows and scenery
Leather straps, fur and weathered kit
Games Workshop built Tone Pro to cover strongly from the first coat and to work for basecoats, layers, highlights, glazing and drybrushing alike. Mix it with Tone Pro Shading Medium to turn it into a shade or glaze, or Blending Medium for extra working time on smooth transitions. Buy the tones either side of this one and the blend is already worked out for you.
12ml pot. New to the range? Our Warhammer Tone Pro guide explains how to pick the two or three ladders your army actually needs.
