Layer paints are thinner and more translucent, meant to be built up gradually over a base coat to add highlights and depth. Contrast paints (and Army Painter's similarly-styled Speedpaint 2.0) work differently again: a single coat that shades recesses and highlights raised areas automatically as it dries, cutting a multi-stage paint job down to one step, which makes both ranges a strong starting point if you're new to painting or want to get an army table-ready quickly. Because acrylics from different brands are chemically compatible, there's no need to stick to one manufacturer's exact palette — mixing Vallejo with Warhammer Colour or Army Painter to hit a custom shade works without issue. Thinning is worth learning early too: a touch of water or a dedicated thinning medium gives smoother, more controllable coats than paint straight from the pot, and is essential if you want to load the same paint into an airbrush rather than a brush.
