The wait for fresh Space Marine content is over: Space Marine 2's Confrontation Update is live right now, and the headline is that most of the good stuff is free. Games Workshop's Warhammer Community announcement on 28 July confirmed two brand-new PvP arenas, six Heroic weapons and a nasty new boss for co-op Operations, all landing without a penny changing hands.
If you have been grinding away as a Bolt-toting Ultramarine since launch, this is a proper content drop rather than a tidy-up patch. There is paid cosmetic content too — a Salamanders armour set and a Raptors pack — but the maps, the weapons and the new enemy are on the house. Here is everything the Confrontation Update adds, and why it might be the nudge that finally gets you building a plastic Space Marine army to match.
What's free in the Confrontation Update
The bulk of the update costs nothing and is available to every player. According to the Warhammer Community announcement, the free content breaks down as follows:
- Two new PvP arenas: Facility and Sanctum, added to the competitive Eternal War rotation.
- A new Terminus-class enemy: a Thousand Sons sorcerer clad in Scarab Occult Terminator armour, stalking into co-op Operations as a boss-tier threat.
- Six new Heroic weapons: including a blazing orange Salamanders power sword and a meltagun-mounted power fist, for players chasing the best gear rolls.
A Thousand Sons sorcerer as a Terminus enemy is a tidy bit of fan-service — the Rubricae's masters make for a far more characterful wall of ceramite to punch through than yet another Tyranid horde.
What's behind the Season Pass
The paid additions are cosmetic only, so nobody is locked out of the actual gameplay. They are included for Season Pass 2 owners, or can be bought separately:
- Salamanders Champion armour set: built for the Heavy class, complete with a drakescale cloak and customisable parts for the Sons of Vulkan faithful.
- Raptors Cosmetic Pack: five armour pieces for the stealthy, oft-overlooked Chapter.
Our take: keeping the maps, weapons and enemy free while charging only for drip is exactly the right call, and it is a relief to see a live-service Warhammer game resist the urge to sell you the fun.
The end of Year 2 — and what comes next
Publisher Focus Entertainment has said the Confrontation Update closes out the game's second year of post-launch support, with Year 3 due to kick off in September. In other words, this is a send-off for the current run of content rather than the last we will hear of the game — so if you have been waiting for a natural jumping-on point, a fresh year of updates is only weeks away.

What it means for you
Every big Space Marine 2 update sends a wave of players from the console to the hobby desk, and this one has plenty of hooks. Falling for that Salamanders Champion set on your Heavy? The tabletop Sons of Vulkan are a brilliant, characterful army — our Salamanders army analysis covers how they play, and that trademark green-and-orange is a genuinely fun scheme to paint with a set of Warhammer Colour paints.
If it is the Thousand Sons boss that has caught your eye, the Rubric Marines and their scheming sorcerers are one of the most striking ranges in the game. And if the update has convinced you it is finally time to go from playing a Space Marine to commanding a whole company, we have a full guide to the best Warhammer 40k starter sets to get you off the launch pad — and the current edition is a friendlier entry point than the hobby has offered in years, as we covered when 11th Edition landed.
The Confrontation Update is a generous send-off for Space Marine 2's second year: free arenas, free weapons, a free boss, and cosmetics for the faithful who want them. If it has you itching to paint your own Astartes, you know where we are.
