Acrylic Paints – The Hobby Standard for Miniature Painters Acrylic is the paint every miniature painter starts with, and most never really leave — water-based, quick-drying, non-toxic, and easy enough to clean up that you don't need solvents or dedicated ventilation just to sit down and paint for an evening. This collection covers acrylic ranges from Warhammer Colour, Vallejo (Model Color, Game Color, Model Air, Game Air and Xpress Color), Army Painter (Warpaints Fanatic and Speedpaint 2.0), AK Interactive, Green Stuff World and more. Not all acrylics are built for the same job. Base paints are thick and opaque, designed to give solid, even coverage in one or two coats — the foundation most painting starts from. Layer paints are thinner and more translucent, meant to be built up gradually over a base coat to add highlights and depth. Contrast paints (and Army Painter's similarly-styled Speedpaint 2.0) work differently again: a single coat that shades recesses and highlights raised areas automatically as it dries, cutting a multi-stage paint job down to one step, which makes both ranges a strong starting point if you're new to painting or want to get an army table-ready quickly. Because acrylics from different brands are chemically compatible, there's no need to stick to one manufacturer's exact palette — mixing Vallejo with Warhammer Colour or Army Painter to hit a custom shade works without issue. Thinning is worth learning early too: a touch of water or a dedicated thinning medium gives smoother, more controllable coats than paint straight from the pot, and is essential if you want to load the same paint into an airbrush rather than a brush. For oils, enamels and specialist weathering paints that sit outside the acrylic family, browse our full model paints range instead. For acrylics specifically, this is the complete range — stocked at our Barry, South Wales shop and online at loadeddice.uk with fast UK dispatch.
Frequently Asked Questions

Acrylic paints are water-based, quick-drying and non-toxic, which is why they're the default choice for miniature painting — they clean up with water, layer well, and don't need solvents or specialist ventilation to use safely.

Yes — all water-based acrylic hobby paints are chemically compatible and can be mixed freely, so you're not locked into one brand's exact colour range if you want to create a custom shade.

A drop of water or a dedicated thinning medium mixed in before you load your brush gives thinner, smoother coats than paint straight from the pot, and is essential if you plan to use the same paint in an airbrush.

Base paints are thick, opaque colours for a solid first coat. Layer paints are thinner and semi-translucent, built for highlighting over a base coat. Contrast (and similarly Speedpaint) are a different format entirely — a single coat that shades and highlights automatically as it settles into recesses.

Yes, once thinned to the right consistency — dedicated airbrush ranges like Vallejo Model Air and Warhammer Colour Air come pre-thinned for convenience, but standard acrylics from any brand can be airbrushed with a bit of extra thinning.
